Classification
Espers are humans whose special power manifests as an ability. Their powers vary drastically in form, from Liu Wei's four superhumanly strong tentacles to elemental, psychic, and physical transformations 19 269.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Esper / Ability User | A human possessing a special power-driving core capable of converting Cold Dark Fundamental Particles into a manifested ability 278. |
| Gene Evolver | A human whose growth primarily develops physical attributes, combat ability, recovery, and endurance rather than a distinct manifested power 278. |
| Spirit Purge Value | A measurement correlated with vitality, resistance to the night, and an esper's overall power potential 46. |
| Limit Coefficient | A measure of how effectively an individual can use their power, influenced by talent, courage, experience, knowledge, combat skill, and crisis response 275. |
Ability Assessment
The earliest Angel Project data divided individuals by Spirit Purge Value, physical capacity, energy output, destructive power, and lethality 46.
| Level | Spirit Purge Value | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| Origin Seed | 1–100 | Baseline range encompassing ordinary people and low-level ability users 46. |
| Evolution | — | Espers at this stage may increase their Spirit Purge Value through combat and by defeating dark eerie entities or other ability users 46. |
| Adamantine | 500–1,000 | Third-level individuals who surpass normal human limits and are difficult to kill without heavy thermal weapons 46. |
| Rampage | 1,000–3,000 | Fourth-level threats capable of endangering an entire region; suppression may require armies, tanks, and armored vehicles 46. |
| Above Destruction | — | Early records lacked sufficient data to define higher stages reliably 46. |
Later survivor rankings use Angel level as a high-end designation. Recorded Angel-level peaks include Qin Feng at 10,150, Mo Qi at 10,800, and Geddy at 14,000 395 431.
Ability Types
The Phoenix Association's Night Walkers organization has cataloged more than 100 abilities and classifies them by uniqueness, potential, and threat 269.
| Grade | Documented examples |
|---|---|
| D-class | Aberrant Form Proliferation, Limb Mimicry, Gigantism 269 |
| C-class | Beast Form, Blood Energy, Corpse Dissolution, Water Manipulation, Metal Skin 269 |
| B-class | Demonic Form, Earth and Stone, Evil Bone, Monstrous Eye, flight abilities 269 |
| A-class | Wind Element, Water Element, Super Body, Resonance, Sonic Wave, Laser, Mental, Super Speed, Telekinesis 269 |
| S-class | Recognized as a classification tier, though no examples are identified in the available records 269. |
Development and Limitations
Growth
- Repeated ability use improves familiarity, mastery, and practical output; ability training is compared to physical exercise for gene evolvers 278.
- Life-or-death combat can stimulate major breakthroughs in gene evolvers, while ability users may raise their Spirit Purge Value through combat victories 46 278.
- Ability development is not standardized: even espers with the same power may evolve through different circumstances and cannot necessarily reproduce another user's method 55.
- The Phoenix Association recommends limiting Cold Dark Reagent consumption to one dose per day, supplemented by sunlight exposure and vegetable juice to help balance dark-energy absorption 278.
Physical Constraints
Most espers without body-strengthening powers develop physical fitness more slowly than ordinary people and gene evolvers. The Phoenix Association therefore recommends physical training, teamwork, or power armor to compensate for weak mobility and narrow ability coverage 278.
- Body-strengthening exceptions — Giant and Blood Energy users can develop formidable physical combat capacity alongside their abilities 278.
- Equipment reliance — Power armor can provide mobility, protection, and combat options unavailable to espers whose abilities lack defensive or movement applications 278.
- Combat ability is not determined by peak alone — Spirit Purge Value represents available power, while the limit coefficient determines how effectively that power is used 275.
Crystallization
Dark Energy Lattices are human-made devices that absorb and store dark energy. Crystallization can increase an esper's ability peak, darkness adaptation, and evolution speed, but carries severe risks when used at night and creates a crystal core that may be stolen 431.
Documented Manifestations
- Tentacle manifestation — Liu Wei grew four sickly-green tentacles capable of lifting tons, moving with high agility, and damaging reinforced train glass 19.
- Wind abilities — Wind Element is classified as A-class; Lin Xian's Wind Cannon demonstrates a compressed ranged force capable of launching an awakened esper backward 19 269.
- Psychic abilities — Psychic powers include telekinesis and high-output mental phenomena; KIKI is identified as a rare psychic esper 36 96.
- Fire abilities — Fire is deployed among high-mobility esper combat teams and can be developed into increasingly specialized techniques 278 410.
- Inorganic-matter control — Ryunosuke can manipulate surrounding metal and debris, eventually sustaining a humanoid puppet that mirrors his movements 505.
- Super speed — Speed espers can achieve movement fast enough to evade conventional tracking, though excessive output may interfere with nearby electronics 505.
- Blood Energy — This C-class ability enhances strength and recovery as blood loss increases, but places severe strain on the heart, lungs, and spinal regeneration 269.
Organizations and Research
- Angel Project — During the first polar night, the project compiled 34 ability classifications and established early correlations between ability users and Spirit Purge Value 46.
- Phoenix Association — Collects ability data, conducts assessments, distributes guidance, and promotes pilot programs to help espers understand and develop their powers 268 278.
- Night Walkers Organization — A Phoenix Association branch formed from Angel Project personnel. Its Postman, Polar Night, and Spark departments handle information dispatch, Dark Tide and Star Abyss investigation, and protection of survivor groups respectively 308.
- Emperor Project — A Phoenix Association mecha-development program that deliberately contains no ability users, reflecting its separate technological approach to humanity's survival 260.
