Background / History
Student of Jilan
Carl studied under Jilan alongside her senior fellow student, Hua Tong. As a young scholar, she admired Hua Tong’s accomplishments and enthusiastically sought opportunities to learn, including a planned lecture by Ding Gehei on Void Collapse. Repeated attacks on the academy already provoked an extreme response: Carl wished that Vacuum Decay would wipe out the civilizations responsible 334 336.
During Hua Tong’s return to the Angel Civilization, Carl became infatuated with Liang*. Her encouragement helped turn Carl’s interest in Angel gene engines into obsessive research. Carl wanted to develop an engine suitable for ordinary Divine River bodies, gain wings, and fly to find her. Supported by He Xi, she worked until she became disheveled, exhausted, and physically unable to continue 336.
He Xi subsequently took over the project. Carl’s engine research helped provide female Angels with combat wings; Anna was the first Angel to adapt successfully to the new engine. Meanwhile, Carl remained stranded in the Yunyuan Star System, unwilling to risk entering a hostile, war-torn Angel society to seek Liang* 338 344.
Estrangement and Independent Research
After leaving the Angel Nebula, Carl blamed Hua Tong for separating her from the person she loved. She declared that she would sacrifice even her life to remain beside Liang*. Her research became increasingly diligent, but her social contact narrowed almost entirely to Jilan and necessary academic discussions 339.
Carl inherited most of the Super Seminary’s research results before breaking away to found the Academy of Death Songs. The Great Clock also passed to her from Jilan, giving her access to preserved Shenhe technology, including secrets that had become untraceable after the civilization’s destruction 92 190 349.
Unlike researchers responsible for an established civilization, Carl could pursue dangerous Void experiments without risking the destruction of a society under her care. The Angels later disclosed that she had deliberately caused some other civilizations’ experiments to fail. Carl also gained jurisdiction over unstable regions after bringing their anomalies under control 190.
Appearance
- Youthful appearance: Historical passages portray Carl as a teenage-looking boy, despite being fifty years old, because of the effects of a Super Gene 334 336.
- Research exhaustion: During the Angel-engine project, Carl becomes unkempt and bearded, appears decades older, and speaks in a hoarse voice before collapsing 336.
- Phantom body: Her later form is repeatedly identified as a phantom body 310 311 315.
- Final appearance: A century after the final battle, Carl has aged dramatically and suffers a prolonged coughing fit while speaking with Yan 351.
Personality
Carl’s early enthusiasm combines genuine admiration for scholarship with hostility toward warlike civilizations. Her feelings for Liang* turn that enthusiasm into self-destructive persistence: she refuses Hua Tong’s orders to rest even when her body is failing. Separation and prolonged conflict leave her increasingly withdrawn 334 336 338 339.
As the Death God, Carl maintains a calm, gentle manner while treating allies, populations, and revived individuals as instruments. She can present herself as “merely a scholar” while distributing powerful engines, abandoning dependent civilizations, and preparing a universe-wide purge. Her stated ideal is a restored universe in which everyone is immortal and matter can be recovered, even if achieving it requires killing every living being first 243 246 311.
Caution governs her response to unfamiliar threats. She retreats from Wei Zitong’s AI rather than remain in an unexplained Void environment, and Kaisha considers her too careful to expose a meaningful weakness through ordinary Revivers. Later, however, prolonged success produces overconfidence—a vulnerability Carl herself recognizes during her strategic contest with Wei Zitong 171 313 349.
Her emotional detachment is incomplete. She desperately tries to save Liang Bing, then loses even the memory of who Liang Bing was. Near the fulfillment of her ambitions, Carl feels hollow and wishes to share her achievement with someone she can no longer remember 311 346 347.
Abilities & Skills
Void Research and Engineering
- Inherits extensive Super Seminary research and uses the Great Clock’s preserved Shenhe knowledge, placing her Void research more than an era ahead of Hexi’s work at the time of comparison 92 190.
- Supplies Void Engines to allies, including Taotie forces and Huaye; the equipment she grants depends partly on her assessment of their usefulness and merits 2 123 243.
- Understands the Realm of Silence as the source of God-Slaying Power. She distinguishes its uncontrolled annihilation from the controlled decay used in God-Slaying Weapons 246 247.
- Proposes that black holes connect dimensional spaces and that Black Hole Creatures may originate in fourth-dimensional space; these are presented as her explanations, not independently established facts 246.
- Envies Hua Tong’s ability to manipulate mathematical logic within cosmic laws, acknowledging a capability she does not possess herself 257.
Phantom Form and Concealment
- Her phantom form is sufficiently difficult to counter that Kaisha and Hexi cannot simply apply methods developed against lesser phantom beings to Carl herself 313.
- Can appear through projections and remain hidden despite Yan searching hundreds of light-years 142 246.
- Is reported to withstand most Void-tier disasters, leading other civilizations to speculate that she has become a Void creature 190.
- Limit: After the emergence of Black Hole Creatures, Carl must remain within the Great Clock. Hua Tong’s reflection warns that powerful mental attacks could otherwise kill her, and that future operations would rely on subordinates or clones 288.
Great Clock Operations
- Uses Time-Space Stasis, protective energy, and large-scale battlefield interference 171 213 350.
- Protects herself and Snow while traveling through the Realm of Silence, where ordinary matter, antimatter, and dark matter are annihilated 247.
- Suppresses Kaisha’s Holy Domain and provides complete enhancement to specially prepared Revivers 350.
- Channels Jilan’s phantom power to reconstruct the Clock as a phantom entity that can be harmed only by Void-tier rule-based methods 311.
- Counters: Wei Zitong’s AI negates its Time-Space Stasis; Kaisha later anticipates and breaks free of the same tactic 171 350.
Resurrection and Consciousness Editing
- Restores dead beings from numerous species, including Angels, Demons, Taotie, humans, Triangle Bodies, and Black Hole Creatures 311.
- Can restore a Reviver’s memories and intelligence, as she does for Snow 315.
- Alters memories and implants ideological loyalty. Revived members of the Xiong Bing Lian recognize their past but submit to Carl as their god 315 349.
- Plants a hidden, loyal personality within Du Qiangwei, instructing it to behave as though it were the primary personality and avoid hostile emotions that might reveal it 345.
- Wei Zitong explicitly considers Carl more skilled than himself at consciousness control and editing 346.
- Costs and counters: Restoration can erase family relationships and later-life memories. Wei Zitong’s Great Clock Countermeasure eventually removes Qiangwei’s hostile personality, though she loses extensive memories 345 348.
Void Assimilation and the Reviver Army
- Spreads a force field intended to convert the universe’s matter and energy into Void forms 311.
- Converts fallen enemies into additional Revivers, allowing military victories to replenish her army 346 349.
- Commands Revivers to self-destruct, stacking assimilation force fields against Wei Zitong’s defenses 315.
- Conducts purges throughout both the Known and Unknown Universe 314.
- Energy limit: Expanding the army without sufficient energy reduces the combat strength of each individual Reviver 347.
- Environmental limit: Revivers become uncomfortable outside Void planes; Plane Stabilizers can suppress their usual advantages 345 350.
- Sacrifices the Reviver Army to replenish the Great Clock before releasing the true Void in the final battle 351.
Strategic Manipulation
- Blocks communications, selectively reveals information, and pressures Di Hongkun by using his granddaughter as leverage 142 156.
- Uses infiltrators and threats against Kaisha to induce betrayal, including Angel Anna’s disclosure of He Xi’s route 344.
- Keeps the Sea of Eternal Warfare under siege to restrain Wei Zitong’s choices, varying the offensive and communication blockade to test his response 346 347.
- Treats battlefield outcomes as data for calculating an opponent’s intentions 347.
- Weakness: Wei Zitong exploits her confidence to conceal his plan to transfer the entire Devourer Universe into the Known Universe 349 350.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Great Clock — Inherited from Jilan; contains preserved Shenhe technological knowledge. Its skull-shaped markings incorporate multiple Academies of Death Songs. Hua Tong ultimately takes the Clock under Carl’s control and gives it to Wei Zitong 190 247 349 351.
- Academy of Death Songs laboratories — House sealed experiments and entities. Lab 3 contains an Asura, while Lab 1 holds Jilan’s phantom behind restrictions that include measures left by Hua Tong 247 310.
- Reviver forces and fleets — Restored individuals and vessels deployed as soldiers, infiltrators, and expendable sources of energy 311 345 351.
Relationships
- Jilan — Teacher and source of both the Great Clock and major research legacies. Academic disagreements diminish Carl’s willingness to show him formal respect 310 336 349.
- Hua Tong — Senior fellow student, early role model, and later academic opponent. Carl resents being taken away from the Angel Civilization; Hua Tong leaves safeguards against her plans 334 339 310.
- Liang Bing / Morgana — Ally tied to Carl’s enduring emotional attachment. Their cooperation includes sharp disputes, but Carl desperately attempts to save her before she disappears from memory 142 213 311.
- He Xi / Hexi — Early research supporter who takes over Carl’s Angel-engine project; later an opponent studying ways to counter her phantom form 336 338 313.
- Kaisha — Major enemy whose death Carl engineers. Her revived form later attacks Carl’s headquarters; after the final battle, Kaisha keeps Carl alive because she alone knows how to restore Yan 182 350 351.
- Yan — Pursues Carl in retaliation for Kaisha’s death. A century after the finale, Carl restores her but cannot explain Wei Zitong’s disappearance 246 351.
- Snow / Sno — Caretaker and devoted subordinate. Carl annihilates him during the Great Clock’s transformation, revives him, and later restores his memories and intelligence 247 311 315.
- Huaye — Instrumental ally whom Carl equips and preserves for future use, even at the expense of antagonizing Morgana 213 243.
- Cheng Yaowen — Revived subordinate valued for his broad strategic perspective; his implanted reverence for Carl overrides his former comradeship with Wei Zitong 347 349.
- Du Qiangwei — Infiltration subject carrying a Carl-loyal parasitic personality until Wei Zitong removes it 345 348.
- Wei Zitong — Initially dismissed as an inexperienced leader, later recognized as Carl’s only equal strategic opponent. He rejects her research partnership and defeats her attempt to impose the Void 315 349 350 351.
- Taotie civilization — Worships Carl and receives her technological support, but she abandons it before its annihilation and later assimilates its remaining members 123 246 314.
