Background & History

Yano was raised as a border noble scion of the White Horse Kingdom and entered knight training after his father recognized his talent for military strategy. His training ended when the condition then known as Petrification Disease forced him out of the program. His father had already turned to stone before Yano came of age. 118 150 181

He initially sought work to support Laura and her child. After safely sending them to Fei City, he remained alone in a rented room in Iron Boot Town. 36 139

Yano entered Oak Territory expecting a demonic domain, but instead found a clean, orderly settlement ruled by Chen Yu. He accepted Chen Yu as his “Boss” and became the Slime’s Rider, receiving treatment for his petrification despite initially mistaking the injections for a sinister ritual. 36 43

His condition was later identified as a dormant bloodline rather than a disease. By resisting Medusa’s Demonic Eye during an attempted cure, he awakened as a Stone-Descendant and eventually discovered his Belmont ancestry among the Stonekin of the Gloomy Lands. 61 75 142

Appearance

Yano is a sturdy, muscular man whose former travel-worn adventurer appearance gradually gives way to that of a heavily trained knight. He commonly carries Chen Yu’s small avatar inside his chest armor or on his shoulder. 37 79 180

  • Usually wears practical leather armor and heavy boots. 37 78
  • Carries a longsword early in the story; later favors a heavy broadsword. 78 180
  • Has bronze skin, a broad chest, and visibly powerful arms after his martial training. 174 180 183
  • Can cover parts or all of his body in stone-like petrified keratin. 75 142
  • Bears a teardrop-shaped black mark on the back of his hand after contracting the Heart-Snatcher Shadow. 188

Personality

Yano is adaptable and dutiful. Though initially frightened by Chen Yu and the dangers surrounding him, he consistently follows orders, accepts dangerous assignments, and treats the Slime as the source of the “miracles” credited to him. 36 49 137

He retains strong knightly ideals and a desire to prove himself, particularly after losing his original chance at knighthood. His confidence can turn into overconfidence when he relies on traps or monster forces, but he learns from stronger opponents and repeatedly chooses to confront dangers despite visible nervousness. 87 169 181

Yano is also straightforward and physically oriented. He openly identifies himself as a warrior among assassin-trained Stonekin, prefers a broadsword to daggers, and sometimes solves problems through brute force before considering subtler methods. 142 174

Abilities & Skills

Stone-Descendant Bloodline

Yano’s awakened Stonekin bloodline gives him direct control over petrification.

  • Can instantly form petrified keratin over his fingertips or body. 75
  • Is immune to petrification after overcoming Medusa’s Demonic Eye. 75
  • Can withstand blades striking his petrified skin with little or no visible damage. 142 182
  • Used his stone-like body to catch a poisoned dagger barehanded. 141
  • Possesses exceptional stamina and brute strength even compared with other Stonekin. 142

Swordsmanship and Sword Scripture

Yano combines Knight combat training with the Sword Scripture’s martial arts foundation.

  • Mastered the Four Realms of the Sword Scripture before taking the Knight Trial. 180
  • Developed Sword’s Cry, causing his broadsword to hum with his battle intent and strengthening his attacks. 182
  • Defeated Karn, the Cave Dweller Knight examiner, in a formal mounted duel. 182
  • Can snap an iron training sword with his bare hands after becoming a Sword Knight. 183
  • Uses a broadsword to clear groups of Abyssal spawn and cut through their carapaces. 202

Knight Training

Yano’s original knight training remains the foundation of his fighting style.

  • Experienced in mounted combat, swordsmanship, and battlefield decision-making. 150 180
  • Earned the Sword Knight title through formal testing of horsemanship, strength, and sword skill. 182
  • Achieved unusually strong synchronization with his lizard mount during his duel with Karn. 182
  • His Sword Knight advancement improves mount speed and sword-technique comprehension. 182 183

Stealth and Infiltration

Although a warrior by training, Yano received multiple assassin-oriented Talents from Chen Yu.

  • Stealth allows him to reduce his presence and move covertly. 87 146 187
  • Hawk’s Eye enhances dynamic vision and lets him track hidden attackers’ movements. 187
  • Cat’s Grace makes his footsteps lighter and quieter. 187
  • Vaporous Illusion alters his facial appearance for infiltration. 139
  • Web Bind and Misleading Attack give him additional control and deception options. 187

Shadow Companion

Yano contracted a Heart-Snatcher Shadow during the Shadow Trial.

  • Gains Shadow Communion, including shadow vision and improved stealth. 188
  • Can make simple changes to his own shadow through Nascent Shadow Body. 188
  • Can travel through connected shadows at speeds beyond normal running. 189
  • Can detach his shadow to observe through another target’s shadow. 189
  • Can interfere with a target through their shadow, causing disruption, fear, confusion, or temporary loss of control. 189

Traps and Magic Arrays

Yano is an increasingly capable field planner, though he originally depended heavily on preparations rather than direct combat.

  • Set Magic Arrays under Chen Yu’s instruction to lure enemies into the Dungeon Mist Zone. 80 81
  • Built a fungal-tree fortress and used it to imprison Rusty Keys thieves. 81
  • Organized traps, Stinger Bee ambushes, and monster defenses against the Shadow Fang Squad. 85 87
  • Helped arrange talismans and Magic Dust for a larger magic array. 118
  • Proposed flanking and rear attacks against Black Fang formations rather than direct assaults. 150

Equipment

  • Broadsword — Yano’s preferred weapon after his Knight and Sword Scripture training. 180 202
  • Leather armor and chest plate — Worn during travel and combat; often used to carry Chen Yu’s avatar. 37 79
  • Lizard mount — Used during the Knight Trial and mounted combat. 181 182
  • Shadow Dust — Given by Nili before the Shadow Trial to attract shadow creatures. 183
  • Magic Array materials — Talismans and Magic Dust used while assisting Chen Yu’s formations. 118

Relationships

  • Chen Yu — Yano’s Boss, benefactor, and king. Chen Yu treated his petrification, granted him Talents, and supports his advancement; Yano serves as Chen Yu’s Rider and Knight-Retainer. 36 75 169 187
  • Nili Belmont — Yano’s Stonekin aunt and mentor. She introduces him to Stonekin history, oversees his trials, and helps him prepare for them. 147 169 188
  • Lyon, Ella, and Max — Belmont Stonekin assassins who first mistake Yano for an accomplice, then accept him after learning his lineage. 142
  • Karn — Cave Dweller Knight and examiner of Yano’s Knight Trial. Their duel ends with Yano earning the Sword Knight title. 180 182
  • Count Bran — A talking crow allied with Chen Yu’s territory. He takes an amused interest in Yano’s petrification and supports him against Rusty Keys. 75 74
  • Alice Arevalo — A Kingdom Knight connected to Yano’s past and the pursuit of Rusty Keys. Her name makes Yano visibly uneasy. 44 89

Story Role / Major Arcs

Knight and Shadow Trials

Defense Against the Abyssal Spawn

After completing both trials, Yano fights alongside Chen Yu’s forces against Abyssal spawn. He uses his shadow cloak, petrified defense, and Sword’s Cry to hold a breach in the battlefield. 202

Trivia

  • Yano considers the “Miracle” title misleading; he believes Chen Yu is the real miracle behind his successes. 49
  • His efforts to hide his identity in Stone Castle fail because of his existing notoriety as a supposed “perverted Stonekin” associated with stripping captives in Gray Mist Lake Dungeon. 174
  • He is unusual among the Stonekin because he is a warrior and knight who also uses Stealth and shadow-based abilities. 142 187
  • Yano considers Chen Yu’s stomach capable of holding “the entire world” because of the Slime’s supply of books, pills, Talent Orbs, and other items. 180 183
