Geography
- Rivers divide much of the country into islands. Severe soil erosion made even the islands difficult to cultivate, while flooding left other areas unsuitable for farming 78 211.
- Its waterways impeded large supply convoys. Early in the war, this limited its value as a route for a large-scale invasion of the Land of Fire 78.
- Jiangxin Island is a coastal island of several dozen square kilometers. Once barren and sparsely built, it became the site of the Starting Point Orphanage and, later, a port 134 263.
History
The Land of Rivers initially remained outside the main Konoha–Sunagakure fighting because it offered little strategic or economic value. That did not make it safe: rogue ninja operated there, and the war between its powerful neighbors worsened conditions for civilians 77 78 134.
Tang Ping established the Starting Point Orphanage on Jiangxin Island and began developing the southern coast. As commander of a ninja army, he ordered bandits and rogue ninja cleared from several hundred thousand square kilometers of coastal territory. He then used Mou Ryō’s Terracotta Army to redirect rivers and reclaim land, with the United Fruit Trading Company nominally controlling the developed region 134 197 211 263.
By Chapter 263, the contrast was stark: the central and northern regions still faced flooding, banditry, and displacement, while the south had working farms and a growing population. Tang Ping later chose not to occupy the north, both to avoid drawing attention and to preserve a visible comparison between life inside and outside his territory 263 827.
Southern Development
| Area | Documented changes |
|---|---|
| River management | Terracotta Army workers deepened and widened channels, redirected water, and reclaimed flood-prone ground for cultivation 211 212 263. |
| Agriculture | By Chapter 263, the south had several million mu of paddies, hundreds of thousands of mu of other farmland, and pastures and orchards. Wooden Oxen helped with plowing and other farm work 263 323. |
| Settlement and security | Refugees were screened before admission. Ashigaru, samurai, and ninja squads guarded the controlled territory; its population had passed one million by Chapter 263 and exceeded five million by Chapter 827 263 827. |
| Jiangxin Island | Its orphanage expanded, and its southern shore gained a harbor, warehouses, a shipyard, and a growing port settlement. The orphanage also concealed Tang Ping’s underground laboratory 134 263. |
| Industry | The southern region became a population transit station and an industrial zone. By Chapter 827, it manufactured components for warships and airships, while more specialized aircraft components were made around Tenshukaku 827. |
Regional Importance
- The southern territory became a food-producing base for Tenshukaku. Its grain stores were already overflowing by Chapter 263, although limited shipping capacity made distribution difficult 263 711.
- Tang Ping used the Land of Rivers as a discreet base for his wider plans. Sunagakure sent a secret delegation there for negotiations 322 323.
- The Dawn Canal begins in the Land of Rivers and carries water across the Land of Wind to the southern sea. Diverting water also reduces flooding and frees usable land at its source 706 769.
