Background and History

Danzo grew up alongside Hiruzen Sarutobi and came to regard Root as Konoha’s indispensable force in the shadows. He considered himself the Hokage’s equal, while Hiruzen repeatedly invoked his office to restrain Danzo’s attempts to claim talented shinobi for Root 6. Danzo’s ambition was to become Hokage and restore Konoha’s glory, a goal he used to justify attacks on political rivals and fellow villagers 70 320.

He targeted Uchiha Tang Ping early, arranging for him to face Kakashi in an assessment that Danzo hoped would end in Tang Ping’s death and damage the Uchiha Clan’s reputation 2. After Hiruzen refused to let Root take Tang Ping, Danzo spread a rumor blaming him—and, by extension, the Uchiha—for the Southwest Border camp’s fall 6 70.

Danzo later worked with Orochimaru on Hashirama-cell and Wood Release research. When their experimental Wood Release user Kinoe was exposed, Hiruzen took him from Root and renamed him Yamato 307 346. Danzo also used a Hokage-approved recruitment order to demand large numbers of Yamanaka shinobi; Hiruzen stopped recruitment from the major clans after seeing Danzo’s real list, but Root had already taken members from smaller clans 320 322. Danzo subsequently conscripted the Aburame Clan’s shinobi while its head, Shibi, was absent. The confrontation led to a three-year prison sentence 391 392 394.

During the Uchiha massacre, Danzo directed the Root and Anbu operation while Hiruzen remained publicly uninvolved. Hiruzen then removed him as Root’s leader before the assembled shinobi, making him bear political blame; Danzo accepted it because he expected to retain control in practice 514 518. He later led Root and supporting Anbu after fleeing Uchiha civilians, presenting the attack as an effort to “protect” them 529.

After Tang Ping exposed the Hashirama-cell prosthetics and Sharingan hidden beneath Danzo’s bandages, Danzo was imprisoned 637. He later fled Konoha and mounted an assassination attempt on Tang Ping with Root and Orochimaru’s subordinates 657. Kabuto eventually reanimated him; Danzo greeted his return as another chance to pursue the Hokage seat 948.

Personality

Danzo believes sacrifices—including those imposed on Konoha’s own clans—are justified if they strengthen the village. He treats Root members as expendable when a mission calls for it, yet preserves them when he expects to need them later 322 426 529 925. His confidence in Konoha and in his own plans can become overconfidence: he assumes the village can defeat Tenshukaku if it intervenes against Root’s pursuit of the Uchiha 529.

His loyalty to Konoha is inseparable from his conviction that he should rule it. He seeks battlefield credit, undermines potential successors, and even helps Orochimaru’s Konoha Crush Plan to dislodge Hiruzen 203 342 590. He shows no remorse when Sasuke confronts him over the Uchiha massacre, insisting that his actions were for Konoha 924.
