Tang San studied under Yu Xiaogang at Nuoding Junior Spirit Master Academy, where he became the academy's strongest student despite possessing the commonly dismissed Blue Silver Grass Martial Soul. He embraced Yu Xiaogang's maxim that “there are no useless martial souls, only useless soul masters,” and defended his teacher fiercely against criticism. 69 70 178

Liu Xinghan first confronted Tang San at Nuoding. Tang San, then a level 22 Soul Grandmaster, challenged him in defense of Yu Xiaogang's honor but was overwhelmingly defeated without forcing Liu Xinghan to use his Martial Soul.
