Background / History

Pei Qian first encounters Fang Xuan in the Yuan Ling City Secret Realm while setting up a formation near a riverbank. Though his martial cultivation is not high, he carries a Spatial Item, possesses extensive formation knowledge, and is willing to explore dangerous locations. He helps Fang Xuan navigate the ice-and-fire stone cave with a bronze mirror, identifies the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Eyes, and explains their value as a nurturing ground for immortal herbs. 253 254

After the Secret Realm expedition, Pei Qian examines the round jade Fang Xuan seized from a teleportation formation and identifies it as one half of a simple teleportation array. In Yuan Ling City, he also helps Fang Xuan locate You Tongfu, a buyer willing to purchase goods of uncertain origin. 261 263

While traveling to Shang Jing with his aunt Pei Zhizhen, Pei Qian discovers a mass grave outside the city. After attempting to help a dying survivor, he identifies the massacre as the Town Protector King's Blood Slaughter of Ten Thousand Li. He later finds another survivor in Yangchang County, uses a small formation to calm him, and concludes that a formation master could have manipulated the victims' memories. 283 295

Pei Qian reunites with Fang Xuan in Shang Jing, where his enthusiasm for Fang Xuan's deeds and his lack of discretion are immediately apparent. During the Lei Province conflict, Pei Qian quickly deploys the God Binding Xuanhuang Array to suppress the Blood Essence Pill's violent blood energy inside Fang Xuan. The array buys Fang Xuan crucial time despite Pei Qian's fear that the pill's energy is beyond what Fang Xuan can absorb. 304

At Cloud Palace, Pei Qian secretly guides Fang Xuan through the sect's formations and offers him a protective formation imprint capable of delaying an Upper Realm martial artist. When Fang Xuan is endangered after a formation collapses, the backlash knocks Pei Qian unconscious; upon waking, he confronts Cloud Palace disciples and threatens the sect for Fang Xuan's safety. 312 315 321
