Background

Jiang Wang was sickly from birth and rarely left Xunyang Marquis Manor before coming of age. A famed physician had predicted that he would not live past twenty-four. Though the manor appears to be in decline, it remains inexplicably wealthy; Jiang Wang suspects this is connected to his absent father. 1 2 18

His household is small, consisting chiefly of the Old Butler Tong Ji, maid Xiaoyu, and painter Zhao Si. Before discovering the Mirage, Jiang Wang had no cultivation and regarded his frail body as an unavoidable limitation. 3 8

The monster incident on Qixia Street changes his life. Under threat, he discovers an ability to freeze monsters and immobilize Su Lingyi's body. His later encounters lead him to identify the Mirage as both the source of his power and the cause of his declining health: it remains stable by consuming his lifespan. 1 2 8

Appearance

Jiang Wang is a strikingly handsome but visibly frail young nobleman. His weak appearance causes cultivators and enemies alike to underestimate him, often mistaking his power for concealment or deception. 10 15 39

  • Sickly since birth and initially unable to travel far without exhaustion 1 6
  • Frequently reclines on a rattan chair, even when receiving visitors or facing danger 10 31 48
  • His health improves after the Mirage's stronger awakening, allowing him to run distances that previously would have exhausted him 18
  • His appearance is repeatedly described as exceptionally handsome 2 15 39

Personality

Jiang Wang remains composed when threatened, even when he does not fully understand the powers protecting him. He habitually provokes opponents into attacking, both to expose their intentions and to test the Mirage under pressure. 1 3 12

He is highly pragmatic about danger. Rather than avoiding powerful enemies, he often welcomes them as sparring partners because combat teaches him to control the Mirage more effectively. This makes him unusually disappointed when enemies choose reconciliation over confrontation. 12 36 38 48

Despite his ruthless decisions, Jiang Wang is protective of those he considers his own. He repeatedly puts himself at risk for Xiaoyu, funds the rebuilding of South City Alley after its destruction, and shows mercy to Akong because he judges her to be simple-minded rather than malicious. 29 31

Abilities & Skills

Mirage

A mysterious power associated with Qixia Street and Jiang Wang's lifespan. The Mirage responds especially strongly to life-threatening danger.

  • Can immobilize and control the bodies of people and monsters 1 2
  • Its control duration varies; Jiang Wang held a Yao for about an hour but could only restrain Su Lingyi briefly 2
  • Functions most reliably within Qixia Street, whose boundaries initially limit Jiang Wang's direct power 7
  • Can suppress an opponent's physical body but does not automatically suppress their consciousness 12
  • Can restrain flying swords themselves, even when their wielder retains conscious control 12
  • Can move groups of people remotely, as demonstrated by returning injured Black Flame Army soldiers to the manor 12
  • Allows Jiang Wang to sense aspects of a monster's nature; he recognizes that the Wangliang in Master Tao's mirror had likely not harmed anyone 21
  • Consumes Jiang Wang's lifespan to remain stable 8 47

Divine Kingdom and the Night Roaming God

Jiang Wang possesses a Divine Kingdom connected to the Night Roaming God, whom he communicates with mentally.

  • The Night Roaming God can lend Jiang Wang power in combat 29
  • Its power enabled Jiang Wang to kill Tan Lao Liu and contend with Feng Linghuai 29
  • It can assist Jiang Wang in flight, though Jiang Wang initially lacks the technique to fly properly on his own 35
  • Full output leaves Jiang Wang severely weakened and can cause the Divine Kingdom to conceal itself 36 37
  • Jiang Wang's body is unable to safely withstand the Divine Kingdom's power for long periods 29 47

Enhancement of Others

Jiang Wang can transmit a beneficial effect through touch, though he does not fully understand the mechanism.

  • Touching Xiaoyu's head causes her to break through to the second realm of Martial Artists 18
  • Attempts to help Shan Qiyu advance, but the attempt does not succeed 20
  • The effect appears connected to the Mirage's scorching energy 18 20

Saber Combat

Though he lacks conventional cultivation training, Jiang Wang is a formidable combatant when wielding the Long Night Saber.

  • Kills Ao Yin after entering Qixia Street 7
  • Defeats the Jianli sent to assassinate him in West City Alley 8
  • Easily suppresses Cai Tanggu, a top-one-hundred Cave Nether cultivator 12
  • Breaks the Qingxuan Bureau cultivator's sword intent and lightning technique 26
  • Fights Xie Wuxing's River Stream Sword Intent head-on and forces him to concede 34 36
  • Defeats Dong Chongyang in their final saber exchange 44
