Background and History

Su Lingyi arrived in Hun City with his junior sister, Du Yanruo, on Fish Abyss Academy orders to investigate the mirage over Qixia Street and search for traces of an Immortal's descent. Though he had completed the painful Foundation Establishment process, he had yet to forge his Yellow Court—the threshold required to truly enter cultivation. 2

Acting on Du Yanruo's resentment toward Jiang Wang, Su initially threatened the Young Marquis with his sword. Jiang Wang's unexplained power immobilized him completely, leaving him unable even to react to a pebble thrown at his face. Once released, Su immediately changed his attitude, claiming the confrontation had been a misunderstanding and retreating from Qixia Street. 1 2

He remained wary of Jiang Wang afterward, particularly after witnessing Jiang effortlessly destroy a fleeing Netherling. Nevertheless, he continued to rely on Fish Abyss Academy's standing and his own near-cultivator status. 4 6

During the Black Flame Army's raid on the Du residence, Su attempted to demonstrate the supposed superiority of cultivators over Martial Artists with his flying sword. A Black Flame soldier knocked the weapon aside and beat him down; Shan Qiyu's strike intended for Su's head instead shattered his right hand. 9

Su was subsequently taken by the Black Flame Army and confined in a woodshed at the Xunyang Marquis Manor. His right arm was lost, and Jiang Wang kept him alive in poor conditions as leverage against Fish Abyss Academy. His completed Foundation Establishment allowed him to endure on minimal food and rudimentary treatment. 13 14 23

Even when opportunities to leave the unguarded woodshed arose, Su believed Jiang Wang was deliberately laying traps and refused to risk escape. He and Du Yanruo instead attempted to exploit Xie Wuxing's strength against Jiang Wang. 36 38 42

Rong Yulu eventually brought Su and Du Yanruo out of the manor during Cai Tanggu's assault. Su then threatened Jiang Wang with his status as the Chancellor's direct disciple and the Imperial Tutor's grand-disciple. Jiang Wang responded by crushing his chest with a fist; Cai Tanggu departed Hun City carrying Su's body. 44 45 46

Appearance

Su Lingyi was introduced as a black-clad swordsman who carried a sword at his waist. 1

After prolonged imprisonment in the woodshed, he became gaunt and sallow, with unkempt hair and beard, vacant eyes, and a weakened body. 36

Personality

Su Lingyi was initially proud of his cultivation progress and readily looked down on Martial Artists and ordinary people. He saw himself as superior to the Black Flame Army, only to be decisively humiliated when his flying sword was knocked away and he was beaten by a soldier. 9

His arrogance was tempered by self-preservation. After Jiang Wang immobilized him, Su immediately abandoned his hostility, offered polite excuses, and withdrew rather than challenge someone he could not understand. 1 2

During captivity, his caution deteriorated into paranoia. He repeatedly assumed Jiang Wang's apparent vulnerabilities were traps, even when escape seemed possible. Yet once released, he returned to threatening Jiang Wang with the prestige of Fish Abyss Academy, the Chancellor, and the Imperial Tutor. 23 42 45
