Background / History

The Great Sovereign Demon King first appeared as the Great Freedom Heavenly Demon inhabiting Xie Lingyun. Zhang Chen extracted it with chains and sealed it in a jar using a Suppression Talisman rather than destroying it, believing it could be reborn. At that time, it admitted to having four additional avatars, one of which was within the Grand Celestial Master. 158

After leaving its host, it claimed to possess no direct power and stated that it would need time, roots, and negative emotions to invade another mind. Zhang Chen nevertheless remained distrustful and kept it restrained through the Nine Bends Yellow River Rune Formation and Soul Hooking Chains. 169 180 183

It later persuaded Zhang Chen to allow it to infiltrate Gods in the Spiritual World's First Heaven by disguising itself as a believer. Its stated plan was to control other Gods from within, a prospect Zhang Chen found useful despite recognizing the danger of giving it freedom. 183

The demon had also been suppressed beneath Buzhou Mountain by an enemy. Zhang Chen cultivated the Hercules Moving Mountain Method, removed the jade-stone key to the suppression, and freed it; the demon then recovered part of its true spirit. It later revealed that many of its avatars were frozen in the Spiritual World's Third Heaven. 334 549

During the Jinling City crisis, the Great Sovereign Demon King's separated head emerged from the Exquisite Pagoda's Dimensional Space. Zhang Chen identified and extracted its dormant clones from multiple students, then forced the weakened head to reunite with the body under his control.
