Background
Xie Lingyun is the daughter of Xie Xuan, the Great Leader of the Northern Lands Inspectorate. Her status grants her influence exceeding that of an ordinary county princess, and Yellow Dawn Temple treats her requests with exceptional deference. 153
Since childhood, she was plagued by a Great Freedom Heavenly Demon attached to and integrated with her soul. Xie Xuan once destroyed the demon with a supreme Zen Method while it was weak, but it revived; as Xie Lingyun’s cultivation rose, so did the demon’s power. 154 The entity was initially only a Fourth-Order existence, but its nature made it exceptionally difficult to destroy through ordinary force. 142
Appearance
Xie Lingyun is depicted as a striking noblewoman with fair skin and a composed, imposing presence. Her appearance varies with circumstance: she wears crimson robes during her early stay at Yellow Dawn Temple, later favors a white dress, and commonly appears in iron armor or chainmail while serving the Inspectorate. 157 161 337 433
- Has slender, jade-like hands. 151
- Wore a large crimson robe that intimidated Cheng Yu during their first meeting. 146
- Often dresses in men’s clothing while traveling or conducting Inspectorate business. 204 996
- Can use Yin Spirit power to lessen the burden of her chainmail. 433
Personality
Xie Lingyun is determined, proud, and unwilling to surrender her identity or family to the Heavenly Demon. When faced with imminent possession, she attempted to kill herself rather than allow the demon to take her body, and she demanded that it spare her family even when she believed her own death unavoidable. 151 152
Despite her noble standing, she is unusually willing to aid commoners and values capable allies. She patiently teaches Zhang Chen the True Dragon Great Stance, examines his injuries, offers him a place in the Inspectorate, and repeatedly seeks to protect him from political danger. 146 150 154 702
After Zhang Chen extracts the Great Freedom Heavenly Demon, her Greed, Anger, and Ignorance are removed along with it. This leaves her exceptionally compassionate, innocent, and trusting—even pleading for mercy for the being that tried to devour her soul. 158 She later retains a strong ambition for cultivation and seeks to forge opportunities for martial artists beyond reliance on Mystic Items. 159 255

Story Role / Major Arcs
Heavenly Demon Crisis
Xie Lingyun arrives at Yellow Dawn Temple seeking a cure for the entity attached to her soul. The Yellow Heaven Dao’s Incense Power fails when a sinister black seal-like force destroys the manifested divine light. 141
She discovers that the Great Freedom Heavenly Demon cannot be defeated through physical strength alone, because it exists within the spiritual realm and is rooted in the minds of sentient beings. As the demon attempts to force her into the Possession Realm and seize her body, she chooses death over surrender. 151
Zhang Chen’s Light of the Righteous God repels the demon when it attacks him, making him the first person she encounters whose power can directly restrain it. She subsequently assigns Zhang Chen and Cheng Yu to serve her, primarily to keep Zhang Chen’s Golden Light close. 152 153
Separation from the Great Freedom Heavenly Demon
Zhang Chen’s talismans temporarily suppress the demon, but an external manifestation merges with a vengeful ghost and feeds on temple disciples, allowing the inner demon to grow stronger. 154 155
After Xie Lingyun is fully possessed, Zhang Chen marks the Great Freedom Heavenly Demon with Soul Hooking Chains and forcibly extracts it from her body as a black lotus. He seals the demon rather than killing it, since it can be reborn from Xie Lingyun’s mind. 157 158
Freed from the demon’s accumulated negative emotions, Xie Lingyun becomes remarkably compassionate and gains an unexpectedly accelerated cultivation pace. 158 159
Alliance with Zhang Chen
Xie Lingyun rewards Zhang Chen with rare Inspectorate talisman texts and studies talisman drawing and Qi Refining under him. Their relationship becomes one of mutual trust, with Xie Lingyun treating him as a younger brother rather than a subordinate. 161 162
She offers Zhang Chen a position in the Inspectorate, but respects his refusal. She also shares intelligence on the Academy lineage, the Inspectorate, the Great God Path, and the growing instability of the Great Victory Dynasty. 163 343
Spiritual World Expeditions
After learning of the passage to the Spiritual World First Heaven, Xie Lingyun plans expeditions to secure its resources. Zhang Chen warns her that all entrants become ordinary mortals within the Spiritual World, regardless of their cultivation. 324 325
She enters the Spiritual World, is endangered by the Ba Snake’s aura, and is saved when Zhang Chen uses Yellow Springs Water to cleanse her soul. Afterwards, she abandons further personal exploration and chooses to employ martial artists instead. 331
She later helps Zhang Chen evade the experts surrounding the Two Realms Passage, providing him a bamboo hat that conceals his presence and returning with him to the Inspectorate camp. 337
Inspectorate Leadership and Later Campaigns
Xie Lingyun is promoted to Upper Capital after helping the Inspectorate contain unrest caused by the Gong Family. She considers forging identity documents for Zhang Chen but decides it would draw too much scrutiny to both of them. 347
By the conflict in Jinling, she has reached Yang Spirit and warns Zhang Chen that the Imperial Court intends to let the Demon Clan and Yellow Heaven Dao weaken each other through war. 702
During the End of Dharma Era, she continues serving as the Inspectorate’s leader despite losing her Divine Soul Path cultivation. She regains some strength through Martial Dao and heavenly treasures, joins the conquest of nearby principalities, and remains concerned with protecting the Northern Lands from hostile vassal lords. 1032 1033
