Ch. 661Research Seminar
Key plot points and events
- Alice and Klein plan to leave Moon City. Klein chooses to visit North City, while Alice takes Derrick elsewhere. She reassures Klein that ordinary Amon avatars should be manageable, but warns that encountering Amon’s main body would be fatal; she suggests resurrection as a possible escape.
- At the Tarot Club meeting, Klein asks Leonard to obtain demigod-level charms from someone connected to him and asks Cattleya to contact Queen Mystic Bernadette for similar charms.
- The World asks the members to help devise a plan to hunt Kotar, a cautious Mythical Creature who has already obtained a Sequence 1 characteristic. The group discusses how to locate him: tracking clues, exploiting his advancement ritual, invoking his Honorific Name, or using Beyonder-characteristic convergence. None offers a safe, immediate solution. Alice warns that a powerful convergence method could lead them straight to Amon.
- Klein asks Fors to help him return to Backlund, hoping to contact his allies and seek Lady Arianna’s help.
- The meeting turns to the ongoing war. Alice, isolated in the Forsaken Land of the Gods, has no news to share and complains about her boredom. She again alludes to her prophecy that a god will die, prompting the group to ask who she thinks it will be. She has no answer.
Character developments and interactions
- Klein is cautious and practical, thinking through escape plans, charms, and how to prepare for Amon. He makes use of the Tarot Club as a source of advice and support, while also teasingly rebuking Alice.
- Alice is irreverent and unsettlingly casual about danger, death, and resurrection. She remains protective of Klein, warning him against drawing Amon’s attention, but also enjoys provoking him and the other members. Her confinement in the Forsaken Land leaves her restless.
- The Tarot Club members take the threat of Kotar seriously and contribute expertise: Audrey assesses his caution, Alger focuses on his desire to advance, Xio considers tracking his ritual, and Cattleya suggests using his Honorific Name. Leonard proposes convergence.
- Cattleya is visibly frightened when Alice asks about Frank’s experiments, suggesting Frank’s unusual research has become a source of dread.
Significant themes
- Preparation versus fate: Klein trusts careful planning, while Alice’s comments frame survival as partly dependent on fate.
- Power and risk: The hunt for Kotar requires confronting a formidable enemy, but the most effective tracking methods could expose the hunters to Amon.
- Isolation and anticipation: Alice’s boredom contrasts with the looming prophecy of a god’s death and the wider war.
- Dark humor: Casual talk of dying, resurrecting, and consuming living mushrooms gives the chapter a comic edge amid serious threats.
