Background
The sect traces its earliest heritage to the primordial era, when weak early humans learned from powerful races through physical cultivation and visualization. Its ancestors modeled their path on the Star God Donghuang Taiyi, a Golden Crow born from the sun. 151
The Grand Daoist Sect was not continuously preserved from the primordial era. Its later patriarch recovered an incomplete Donghuang Taiyi visualization inheritance from a small thousand world more than two thousand years ago; subsequent generations developed their own paths from that foundation. 151
The sect's core inheritance originates from the Golden Crow remnant seal, an item connected to Donghuang Taiyi. Golden Crow and Great Sun lineages emerged from disciples' enlightenment around this seal and became the sect's dominant traditions. 292
Although its inheritance is incomplete, the sect seeks to supplement it through new opportunities and inherited arts. Its leadership has long aspired for the sect to rise to the level of a Holy Land. 151 291
Position in Northern Origin Province
The Grand Daoist Sect is the strongest sect in Northern Origin Province and recruits openly throughout the province. Daoist cultivators who achieve success generally regard joining it as the highest available path. 140 175
It traditionally avoids direct administration of the government and common people, leaving those matters to the Great Zhou authorities. In return, the imperial court relies on the sect to resolve threats beyond ordinary officials' capabilities, including heretical cult activity and supernatural dangers. 107
- The sect helps guard Northern Origin Province City and maintains the Submerging Dragon Grand Formation, a large-scale defensive formation surrounding the city. 178
- The formation was built using extensive sect resources and the blessings of generations of Daoist experts; it can defend the city against threats from the Youlan Mountain Range. 178
- The imperial court stationed the Marquis of Divine Might in the province partly to restrain the sect's influence. 252
- After the Imperial Court issued its Pacification Order, the sect accepted submission rather than confront the Moon Boat, a King of Divine Artifacts. 291
Recruitment and Advancement
Recruitment
| Route | Requirements and Outcome |
|---|---|
| Triennial recruitment | Held once every three years across Northern Origin Province. It primarily recruits menial and outer disciples, giving less-qualified applicants an opportunity to demonstrate talent. 140 |
| Daoist temple recommendation | Recommended candidates may take monthly collective assessments at Taiyuan Academy. Passing grants direct entry as an Inner Disciple rather than an outer disciple. 134 |
| Elder recommendation | Exceptional candidates may attract an elder's attention before entering the sect and be accepted as registered disciples. 134 144 |
For the Daoist-temple route, candidates generally must condense a Yin Spirit and reach the Object Manipulation Realm before age twenty-five, then pass the sect's stringent assessment. 116 145
The entry assessment evaluates more than cultivation realm. Shi Yi's assessment included Yin Spirit Egress, deity visualization, Object Manipulation, and the Heart-Questioning Path. 141 144
Sect Ranks
| Rank | Position and requirements |
|---|---|
| Menial Disciple | Performs daily labor near the foot of Moon Gazing Mountain. 147 |
| Outer Disciple | Has lighter duties than menial disciples, but must meet advancement standards or leave the sect. 147 |
| Inner Disciple | Recognized as a true sect disciple; temple-recommended candidates who pass entry assessments enter at this rank. 134 189 |
| Elite Disciple | Backbone of the sect; Inner Disciples generally need a Core Elixir and must pass the elite assessment before age forty. 147 163 |
| Core Disciple | Above elite disciples and regarded as future high-level sect personnel. 228 |
| True Disciple | Receives the sect's genuine inheritance and its most valuable cultivation methods and resources; normally must first become an elder's personal disciple. 152 |
Inner Disciples may retain their status until age forty if they avoid major offenses. Those who fail to reach the Core Elixir Realm and pass the elite assessment generally become stewards or leave to establish and serve Daoist temples. 147 163
Elder Disciple Classes
| Class | Description |
|---|---|
| Registered Disciple | Has the weakest connection to an elder and receives comparatively limited attention. 152 |
| Official Disciple | A registered disciple judged to possess sufficient potential to warrant further cultivation. 152 |
| Personal Disciple | Direct inheritor of an elder's legacy and the most likely successor to their peak. 152 |

- Long Night Society — An Inner Court society that attempted to recruit Shi Yi. 171
- Divine Light Society — A rival Inner Court society that also sought Shi Yi's membership. 171
- New Inner Disciples are exempt from mandatory missions for their first six months, but many join groups to earn contribution points for cultivation resources. 155
Cultivation Heritage
Golden Crow and Great Sun Lineages
The sect's main cultivation traditions center on Donghuang Taiyi, the Golden Crow, and the great sun. Its known Immortal-realm-capable methods include:
- Golden Crow Carrying Sun Diagram
- Taiyi Golden Crow Diagram
- Great Sun Patrolling the Heavens Diagram 151
The sect places no formal restriction on a disciple's choice of main method, but its lineages have a natural hierarchy. Cultivators of Golden Crow and Great Sun methods receive the greatest environmental and institutional support. 151 249
- Peaks aligned with these methods use formations that create warmer, more suitable cultivation environments. 209
- The sect's representative Daoist Arts include Golden Crow Divine Fire and related Great Sun techniques. 151 165
- The sect's fire-based arts are powerful but comparatively narrow, motivating its pursuit of supplementary sword and defensive inheritances. 257 269
Golden Crow Remnant Seal
The Golden Crow remnant seal is the source of the sect's core inheritance and is kept inside the Qian Yuan Secret Mansion. Qualified cultivators may apply to meditate near it and seek personal enlightenment. 292 293
- Fighting is forbidden within the Qian Yuan Secret Mansion. 293
- Enlightenment sessions are arranged by the sect and limited in duration; remaining inside after the secret mansion closes results in temporary confinement. 293
- Following the Pacification Order, the Great Zhou Imperial Family required imperial scions to enter the sect and gain enlightenment from the seal directly. 292 293
Resources and Infrastructure
- Moon Gazing Mountain formations — Gather the Essence of the Great Sun, Moon Essence power, and other energies for cultivation; higher residences receive purer and stronger benefits. 173
- Courtyard formations — Inner Disciple identity tokens can activate private formations that block spying and wandering spirits. 148
- Sect contribution points — Internal currency used to exchange for resources and access sect services; outsiders cannot directly use the system. 147 177
- Oddity breeding grounds — The sect maintains specially formed areas in the Youlan Mountain Range to raise exotic beasts and provide flesh, blood, and other resources to disciples. 155
- Medicinal fields — Cultivate ordinary alchemical ingredients, while dangerous collection missions supply herbs that cannot be grown under controlled conditions. 175
- Artifact refinement and talisman facilities — Produce Daoist weapons and other magical artifacts for sect use and trade with external factions. 245
Discipline and Security
Sect rules prohibit Inner Disciples from initiating combat without cause. The Law Enforcement Hall is responsible for enforcing these rules and investigating internal threats. 149
The sect executed Elder Zeng Jun after he admitted collusion with the Life-Absence Cult for longevity methods. 228 Elder Jia Zehan was later suppressed and killed after attempting to escape with a demonic cultivation method. 248 249
Under Cang Yu's orders, the sect also cleared the Life-Absence Cult's remaining strongholds throughout Northern Origin Province with enough precision to make the cult suspect an internal traitor. 230 232
