Background / History

Lu Yuyan has longstanding ties to Shen Manzhi and Chen Xiaoxiao. After Chen Xiaoxiao was separated from Shen Manzhi amid fear surrounding a plague, Lu Yuyan helped search for her but could not locate her. She later reunites with Xiaoxiao and reveals that Shen Manzhi is at the Dragon King Palace, a place whose residents may be unable to leave freely. 206 207

At the Dragon King Palace, Lu Yuyan became involved in its power structure and raised Ye Chen as her son. While a masked man trained Ye Chen for the Dragon King position, Lu Yuyan was left to manage the Palace’s affairs as acting Regent. Her administrative duties and cultivation left little time to remain close to Ye Chen. When he returned from his training, he had become emotionally distant, replacing “Mama” with the formal titles “Mother” and eventually “Regent.” 279

Lu Yuyan later reveals that Shen Manzhi, a fox demon and her close, sister-like companion, is connected to Ye Chen’s conception. The two concealed the nature of their relationship and told both Ye Chen and Chen Xiaoxiao only that their father had left. 293
