Whoosh—
Konohagakure, inside a training ground.
Yakushi Kabuto froze in place. Hidezawa's figure abruptly appeared behind him, a kunai imbued with Wind Release held against his neck.
Kabuto's mind was still a blur. He knew he was no match for Hidezawa.
Otherwise, he would not have been beaten so badly by Hidezawa at Root's training base that he questioned his entire life. But being defeated in an instant was far beyond anything he had imagined!
"You lost."
Hidezawa did not dwell on it. He withdrew his kunai and looked at Kabuto with a smile.
"That was rather disappointing. You're even weaker than I expected. If you suddenly got exposed while infiltrating somewhere, how would you survive?"
"..."
Kabuto silently watched Hidezawa. After a long while, he took a deep breath and shook his head.
"Against the Flying Thunder God Technique, I doubt even stronger shinobi could hold out for long. But when did you learn Flying Thunder God?"
Kabuto was practically numb by now, though that was understandable.
Just as he had said, even stronger shinobi would likely feel helpless when facing the Flying Thunder God Technique!
What he could not understand was how Hidezawa had suddenly learned the Flying Thunder God Technique.
"It was a reward for my mission in Sunagakure. I spent several months studying it before I gradually figured it out."
Hidezawa shrugged and said with a grin.
Of course, that was a joke. It had taken him less than a second to learn Flying Thunder God and reach a respectable level of mastery.
Naturally, the price had been using up that one-time Shinobi World Professor ability.
But Hidezawa did not think it was a loss. If nothing else, with Flying Thunder God mastered, he would be far more efficient at escaping when he encountered real danger!
Strength could be accumulated slowly, but you only ever had one life—especially in a world where a kunai through the back could kill you.
Still, Hidezawa had been cautious. Although he had learned the technique, he had not used it right away.
He had not gone on any missions recently, so he had broken Flying Thunder God down into parts and practiced them in front of Shisui and Yugao, creating an illusion.
By now, he felt it was about time to bring it out. After all, the Chunin Exams were approaching.
"Also, Flying Thunder God isn't as invincible as you say. As far as I know, some people can still react to it and use mutually destructive methods to deal with it."
"You learned it in just a few months? You really are..."
Kabuto was deeply moved by the first half of that statement, but he did not quite believe the second.
"Besides, Flying Thunder God is so fast. Surely it would be hard for anyone to keep up with it?"
Hidezawa glanced at Kabuto. Clearly, this guy still lacked an understanding of this world.
Not to mention Obito, who could use Kamui to avoid Flying Thunder God directly, the pair of brothers from Cloud Village truly could keep up with it.
The weakness of Flying Thunder God was that it still needed Cursed Seals for positioning. As long as one avoided them beforehand, there was still a chance.
Moreover, when Minato Namikaze ambushed Killer B, Killer B's blade had already been aimed at his stomach!
Of course, a kunai had also been pointed at Killer B's head.
But no matter what, that was still one way to take the enemy down with you.
"Enough about that. How have things been on your end lately?"
Hidezawa shrugged and directly changed the subject.
"What's the situation in Root right now? And did you find a chance to look into the Orphanage?"
"Root... things haven't been good for anyone lately."
At the mention of Root, Kabuto's mouth twitched. He could not help glaring at Hidezawa, as if he wanted to say something but stopped himself.
The recent training volume in Root had become absurd. Kabuto even suspected that Danzo wanted to train them to death outright.
That inhuman training was downright lethal, and the culprit behind it all was Hidezawa, who was still making sarcastic remarks right in front of him!
Shaking his head, Kabuto decisively skipped over that subject. His expression then turned grave.
"As for the Orphanage, I did look into it. The director really did leave several years ago..."
"So what worries me most now is that my guess has come true."
Hidezawa nodded. He believed Kabuto had the ability to investigate it secretly.
In the original story, Kabuto had not acted because he trusted Danzo, but things were different now.
"Danzo still hasn't assigned you a mission? Something like infiltrating another village?"
"There's been some indication of that, but they haven't said where specifically yet."
Kabuto sighed helplessly, then looked at Hidezawa seriously.
"You didn't finish what you were saying last time. What exactly are you planning to do?"
"What to do? It's actually very simple."
Hidezawa carefully surveyed the surroundings before speaking a little more seriously.
"We'll naturally make Lord Danzo famous throughout the shinobi world and ensure his name rings in everyone's ears."
"..."
Kabuto's expression stiffened, but he was smart. After thinking carefully for a moment, he seemed to understand.
"You mean, just like what you did in the Wind Country?"
"Looks like you've grown quite a bit."
Hidezawa nodded in satisfaction. Kabuto had always been talented!
"Danzo dreams of becoming Hokage. Naturally, that gives us something to exploit."
"In the Wind Country, although what you did served Konohagakure's interests, all the hatred was concentrated on Danzo."
Kabuto naturally picked up the thread, his gaze growing somewhat solemn.
"No matter what happens in the future, or what Sunagakure becomes, they will bear a grudge against him. That might even affect the relationship between Konohagakure and Sunagakure.
"And the greater Danzo's reputation becomes, the more his ambition will swell. Then, within Konohagakure..."
"The Hokage may indulge him, but I don't think the Hokage would want something extreme and uncontrollable to emerge."
Hidezawa gave the conclusion. Whether those words would prove true was hard to say. After all, Danzo had been able to assassinate the Hokage and remain unharmed.
But the assassination had still left consequences. After the Uchiha massacre, the power of Danzo's Root had once been reclaimed.
And there was no way the Third Hokage could remain completely unaware of the things Danzo had done. At the very least, Hidezawa would not let him stay unaware!
What happened afterward would be hard to predict.
"So, we need to add a little more burden to Lord Danzo's shoulders."
Hidezawa patted Kabuto's shoulder and said with a low chuckle.
"After all, we're Root members. Naturally, we must serve Lord Danzo!"
"You really are too evil."
Kabuto could not stop himself from muttering that, but it immediately displeased Hidezawa.
A guy addicted to grave robbing, who would squeeze every last bit of value from even the dead and practically deserved to be hung from a streetlamp, was calling me evil?
"Then what about the director?"
After thinking for a moment, Kabuto continued asking.
"First, we need to determine where the director is. But I still believe it should be the place you'll be sent to infiltrate on your next mission."
Hidezawa could not be bothered to argue with him and answered directly.
"But to make sure, keep acting as you did before. Emphasize that you'll leave after completing your final mission, and also express that you want to see the director. Understand?"
"Mm, I understand."
Kabuto nodded obediently. He had basically boarded a pirate ship by now.
But he did not regret it!
Whether it was the grand vision Hidezawa had laid out for him, their bond as children from the same Orphanage, or the possibility that Danzo had truly deceived their director—
Especially the matter of the director. It had changed his heart, and he was destined to oppose Danzo!
"Don't worry."
Seemingly noticing that Kabuto was still nervous, Hidezawa patted his shoulder again.
"Danzo's fate will surely be in our hands in the future!"
"Mm..."
Kabuto adjusted his glasses and steadied his emotions, but soon he gave a soft laugh.
"Still, our fate is currently in his hands. The Chunin Exams are about to begin, and haven't you been assigned as an examiner?"
"..."
Hidezawa pursed his lips, but soon thought of something and smiled.
"That's right. I'll gain experience, and when you leave Root and need to take the exam someday, I might still be the examiner!"
"..."
Kabuto was stunned. Thinking it over carefully, that was fucking possible!
"So, if you don't want to be a Genin for the rest of your life, you'd better be more polite."
"..."
"Now do you understand why you should respect authority?"
"..."
