Background / History

Danzō led Root as Konohagakure’s covert arm, believing it should remain “deeply rooted in the darkness” and eliminate threats to the village by any means necessary. Though he and Hiruzen Sarutobi had been comrades for decades, Danzō resented Hiruzen for becoming Hokage in his place and pursued two enduring goals: becoming Hokage himself and unifying the Shinobi World under Konoha’s voice. 9 10

He recruited orphans into Root, including Shihara Hidezawa after Yakushi Kabuto volunteered himself. Danzō’s training methods were brutal, and he maintained control over Hidezawa through a Cursed Seal while leveraging Yakushi Nonō’s safety as additional pressure. 2 10 31

Danzō repeatedly clashed with Hiruzen over Root’s authority. He sought to bring Naruto, the Nine-Tails’ Jinchūriki, under Root control, but Hiruzen refused. After Root operative Kinoe attacked Kakashi, Hiruzen surrounded the Root base and forced Danzō to surrender Kinoe and fold Root into Anbu. 10 30 31

Using Hidezawa as an intermediary, Danzō extended his influence into Sunagakure and attempted to shape international negotiations through intelligence, covert pressure, and financial offers. Danzō regarded the Uchiha as a fundamental threat. His hostility escalated after Shisui Uchiha awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan; Danzō pursued Shisui’s power and moved against him while Hiruzen was absent. Shisui attempted to assassinate Danzō, but Danzō survived through Izanagi, powered by Kagami Uchiha’s Sharingan. 35 36 115 116

The apparent death of Shisui deepened the Uchiha–Konoha conflict and intensified Hiruzen’s anger toward Danzō. After the Uchiha massacre, Danzō was stripped of his authority as Hokage Assistant and Root’s leader due to his role in the crisis, allowing Hidezawa to assume control of Root. 117 118 127

Leaks from the Rain Country subsequently exposed Danzō’s alleged involvement in the Uchiha clan’s downfall, the Eight-Tails Jinchūriki’s death, Sunagakure’s “death mission,” illegal Sharingan collection, Wood Release experiments, and an attempt on Hiruzen’s life. With Konoha turning against him, Danzō gathered loyal Root members and fled. 130 133 134

Believing he was escaping with Orochimaru’s assistance, Danzō was actually manipulated by Hidezawa’s impersonation of Orochimaru. His defection triggered a multinational pursuit involving Konoha, Akatsuki, and several great villages; he ultimately died during the ensuing conflict. 132 134 138

Personality

Danzō was driven by an obsessive need to become Hokage. He interpreted Hiruzen’s caution and willingness to compromise as weakness, while presenting his own authoritarian methods as the only path capable of protecting Konohagakure. 10 103 125

He viewed people as tools, assets, or threats to be managed. This outlook informed his use of Root’s Cursed Seals, hostage-like leverage over subordinates’ bonds, clandestine intelligence networks, and attempts to direct foreign events through intermediaries. 10 31 91 98

His fear and prejudice toward the Uchiha were especially pronounced. Even while invoking Kagami Uchiha’s loyalty to Konoha, Danzō stole and used Kagami’s eye, treated Shisui as an enemy, and sought the Mangekyō Sharingan for himself. 9 116
