Background / History
Anbu service and clan politics
Shisui joins the Anbu team in place of Hayate. Hidezawa’s attachment to Anbu also serves Danzo’s intention to monitor him through a Root operative 2 9.
Within the Uchiha, Shisui belongs to the moderate faction seeking peaceful integration into Konoha. The clan’s forced relocation and the rumors surrounding the Nine-Tailed Fox Incident drive many previously neutral members toward the radicals. Shisui regards Anbu service as a way to earn the Hokage’s trust, but struggles to persuade his elders to accept help from outsiders 33.
Obito’s manipulation
Obito confronts Shisui with allegations about Danzo’s involvement in the White Fang’s suicide and the Uchiha’s relocation, mixing truth and falsehood to undermine his trust in Konoha. Hidezawa’s unexpected arrival interrupts the encounter 66.
Shisui subsequently fights alongside Hidezawa against Obito and is saved when Obito attempts to pull him into Kamui’s dimension. After the battle, he agrees to remain with Hidezawa to protect his eyes and learn more about Danzo. The revelation of his Mangekyō excites the clan’s elders and strengthens Obito’s desire to obtain his eyes 68 71 72.
Return to the clan and attack on Danzo
Shisui tells Hidezawa that he intends to eliminate Danzo, then leaves Anbu and returns to the clan. Fugaku welcomes his return, believing his Mangekyō will help stabilize the Uchiha’s internal divisions 93 101.
His assassination plan includes having Itachi kill him afterward, allowing the clan head’s son to become a hero and create a path toward reconciliation. The attack fails when Danzo survives decapitation through Izanagi. Hidezawa intervenes, restrains Shisui with Wood Release, and destroys his third-stage Susanoo with Golden Wheel Reincarnation Explosion 116 117.
Hidezawa reports that Shisui’s body cannot be found while secretly keeping him alive in an underground laboratory. Shisui’s apparent death intensifies the clan’s hostility toward Konoha, while his farewell letter pushes Itachi toward resolving the conflict in his own way 117 121 124.
The massacre and the Uchiha “ghosts”
During the massacre, Shisui secretly infiltrates the clan compound with Kabuto. He is horrified to see Itachi killing relatives without regard for age, gender, or whether they are shinobi. He intervenes to protect Izumi 126 171.
Afterward, he appears before the rescued Uchiha. Hidezawa explains that Shisui selected survivors who still valued peace, but that they must remain hidden and cease publicly using the Uchiha surname. Like Shisui, they become the clan’s “ghosts” 128.
Sasuke’s training and Itachi’s death
Shisui becomes one of Sasuke’s principal instructors at Root’s base, preserving the clan-specific training that Sasuke otherwise lacks. He also helps welcome Sasuke when Kabuto reveals the surviving Uchiha to him 157 163 168.
When Sasuke confronts Itachi, Shisui and the other survivors observe from hiding. Shisui briefly blocks Sasuke’s attack so that every victim present can demand an explanation, then condemns Itachi for destroying the clan he had entrusted to him 170 171.
After Sasuke kills Itachi, Shisui removes Itachi’s eyes for Sasuke’s future use and burns the corpse as a precaution against Impure World Reincarnation. He turns his attention toward vengeance against Obito, whose actions helped initiate the clan’s downfall 172.
Personality
Shisui considers the village and clan equally important: Konoha provides protection for the Uchiha, while the Uchiha contribute strength to Konoha. He opposes both the clan’s violent extremists and the officials who slander and isolate it 114.
Despite his initial reputation for Uchiha arrogance, he approaches his new teammates with humility and willingness to cooperate. His pride instead emerges through his conviction that he must personally solve the clan’s crisis, placing increasing pressure on himself 9 93 115.
His faith in the Third Hokage persists even after his failed assassination attempt, prompting Hidezawa and Kabuto to criticize his naivety. Itachi’s massacre destroys his earlier warmth toward his protégé, but he remains protective of the survivors and committed to Sasuke’s growth 121 157 171.
