Once the ships entered faster-than-light travel, the Celestial System Fleet instantly vanished into profound darkness. The light emitted from there could no longer catch up with our ships, creating the illusion that the mother fleet had disappeared in an instant.
Of course, that was only what could be seen optically. The information-gathering observation instruments aboard the warships could still see the Celestial System Fleet, now nearly reduced to a tiny round speck. The bright Psionic Death Star glimmered with blue light in the darkness, while the explosions and artillery fire scattered above the fleet had become a hazy halo. A few seconds later, the Celestial System Fleet became a single pixel on the display, then disappeared from the naked eye.
Older Sister sat beside me with her eyes tightly shut. Since giving the warship a rough direction, she had not said another word. She had merely told us to continue at faster-than-light speed. But I knew she was trying to pinpoint the ancient starship's exact location. That was not easy—we all knew Older Sister had never had much sense for composition or distance.
At least she had a rough sense of direction.
Curses were truly remarkable things. Sometimes I even felt they were a power that directly altered mathematical laws. So far, we had not found any way to completely resist Older Sister's curse. Powerful psionic energy could suppress a curse's effects because, once concentrated to a certain degree, it distorted nearby information, throwing the "probability" the curse relied upon into chaos and thus removing it from the curse caster's control. But complete immunity to curses seemed exceedingly difficult. The still-unseen War Song starship was the same. Although Older Sister's curse could not affect it due to the immense distance, she could still sense her psychic power reacting to
