Background / History

Kingpin rose to dominance in New York's criminal world through his strength, intelligence, courage, and perseverance. By the time of the bounty placed on Wes Erwin, he was already regarded as the city's underground emperor, commanding a large group of underlings and a business empire large enough that ordinary wealth no longer interested him. 163 170

He previously cooperated with Madam Gao, who controlled much of New York's heroin trade. Kingpin became suspicious when her actions suggested that she sought something beyond profit, prompting him to investigate her in secret. This investigation led him to the Dragon Bone buried beneath Manhattan. 170

Kingpin's pursuit of the Dragon Bone was driven by the assassination of his wife, Vanessa, and son, Richard. Believing the Dragon Bone could restore the dead, he was willing to risk conflict with S.H.I.E.L.D., The Hand, and Wes in exchange for a chance to reunite his family. 170 181
