He had thought this job would take a little longer, but it had been resolved surprisingly smoothly.
Conan Was as Normal as Ever Today
When Jiang Hang found the client's missing necklace in the small grove behind the shrine, Imai Midori's face was already full of surprise.
"Mr. Jiang Hang, how did you find it?" Imai Midori looked utterly baffled, hoping to get an answer from Jiang Hang.
After finding the necklace, Jiang Hang immediately led Imai Midori out of the grove.
Once they were out of the woods, Jiang Hang gave Imai Midori a brief, made-up explanation.
"Careful observation, and thinking."
"Why do you think her necklace fell in that grove?" he asked Imai Midori.
Listening to Jiang Hang, Imai Midori looked at the grove, which hardly anyone ever visited, and seemed to realize something.
"You mean the client accidentally lost her necklace while meeting someone here... You mean that lady was here, meeting someone?" She said the last word, "meeting," especially quietly.
When she saw Jiang Hang nod, Imai Midori let out a startled cry. "Does that mean you had already noticed it while speaking with the client, Mr. Jiang Hang?"
"It was only a guess then. But after following the trail here, I could more or less figure out what happened." Jiang Hang wrapped the necklace in a handkerchief, then reminded Imai Midori, "Don't go spreading this around, understand?"
For now, Imai Midori had only guessed that the client had been secretly meeting another man here.
But through Jiang Hang's Revealing Eagle Vision, there were quite a few signs of a fight left in the grove. That was probably why the client had failed to notice her necklace falling off.
And because Jiang Hang had clearly seen those traces, he hurried out of the grove as soon as he found the necklace.
His job was only to recover the necklace. It was best not to get involved in anything that could damage a detective's reputation.
At most, in a few days, he could anonymously mail the client's husband a colored hat as a hint.
After hearing Jiang Hang's warning, Imai Midori nodded vigorously, saying she would absolutely never tell anyone about it.
After burying the affairs of that particular circle deep in her heart, Imai Midori checked the time. From accepting the job, rushing to the client's home, and then Jiang Hang finding the lost necklace, the entire process had taken less than an hour. With such astonishing speed, it was no wonder Jiang Hang could take on four or five jobs a day.
At that moment, Imai Midori thought of the Jiang Hang in her own writing. She had previously felt that although the Jiang Hang she wrote was somewhat weakened, he should not have been too far off from the real Jiang Hang.
But after seeing Jiang Hang complete a job so effortlessly with her own eyes, she now felt that the Jiang Hang in her story and the real man before her were not even in the same league.
I really need to keep working harder. Mr. Jiang Hang trusts me enough to let me write his story, so I can't let him down. I have to write something even more exciting!
Imai Midori silently made that resolution, then looked at Jiang Hang.
"Are we going to return the necklace to the client now?"
Jiang Hang shook his head. "No rush. We've found the necklace, so we can take it over anytime. But there's something more important right now."
"Something more important...?" Imai Midori did not seem to understand what could be considered important to Jiang Hang.
"Come on, let's go take a look at the film crew. I know someone there, so we'll go say hello first. Maybe there'll even be a celebrity you like."
That was what Jiang Hang said. If Conan were not here, he would have had no interest in any film crew. But with that little god of death around, he truly could not rest easy.
Whenever Jiang Hang was with Conan, he would scan the area around him with Eagle Vision every so often to see whether a murder case might suddenly appear.
According to the system, Conan was an important figure in this world, practically a child of destiny. Anything that happened around him counted as a normal occurrence.
Rather, the day no murder cases happened around Conan would be the abnormal situation for this world.
So he was going to see whether Conan's surroundings were as "normal" as ever today.
When Jiang Hang and Imai Midori arrived near the film crew, the staff stopped them because filming was currently underway.
But just as Jiang Hang was about to say that he knew Kogoro Mouri, another staff member who looked like a production assistant approached him with a surprised expression.
"Mr. Jiang Hang, have you come to be a consultant for our crew too?"
Jiang Hang found that strange instead.
What was this about being a consultant? Had he agreed to become this crew's consultant? Why did he not remember anything like that?
After asking a few questions, he learned that the drama being filmed was a mystery thriller. A few days ago, the crew had sent Jiang Hang an invitation in the television station's name, hoping he would serve as a consultant and offer suggestions from a detective's perspective.
But Jiang Hang had assumed it was that detective show from the television station approaching him again, so he had Shizuka Sakaki politely decline the invitation.
The crew had then invited Kogoro Mouri, whose reputation recently was no weaker than Jiang Hang's, to serve as their consultant.
But now that Jiang Hang had shown up as well, this production assistant seemed to assume he had also been invited as a consultant.
After learning the details, Jiang Hang became somewhat curious about the crew. Led by the production assistant, he and Imai Midori entered the set without issue.
When Kogoro Mouri saw Jiang Hang arrive, his expression instantly became strange.
Why have I been running into this kid everywhere lately?
Recently, ever since the name Sleeping Kogoro had spread, not only had his fame grown considerably, but he had also begun receiving more jobs. Combined with the large amount of child support Conan's mother had given him some time ago, he could now be considered both successful and famous.
But every time he ran into Jiang Hang, he felt inexplicably frustrated.
During the Art Museum Incident, Jiang Hang had already solved the case by the time he arrived. When he accepted Ikemura Kimie's commission, she became a suspect in attempted murder almost immediately afterward, and his job naturally fell through. And in the murder case he encountered a few days ago, Jiang Hang had somehow gotten wind of it, rushed over, pointed out the flaw in his reasoning, and ultimately uncovered the truth.
Everything went smoothly elsewhere, but the moment he ran into Jiang Hang, something always went wrong.
People online said Jiang Hang was Kaito Kid's nemesis, but Kogoro Mouri felt that Jiang Hang should be his nemesis instead.
Conan, Green with Envy
Seeing Jiang Hang run over for no apparent reason, Kogoro Mouri instinctively thought of his role as the "production consultant."
Could Jiang Hang have come this time to compete with him for that position?
Although being a production consultant did not pay much, nor would it earn him much fame in the end, that was not why Kogoro Mouri had joined this production.
His gaze involuntarily drifted toward a certain actress nearby who had just finished filming a scene and was taking a break.
She was Yoko Okino, one of the hottest female stars in all of Japan lately.
Kogoro Mouri was her devoted fan. It could be said that he had accepted the consultant job without hesitation precisely because he had learned that Yoko Okino was also one of the leads in this television drama.
Rather than coming here to work, he had really brought his entire family along to chase after a celebrity.
With that thought, the way he looked at Jiang Hang changed somewhat.
Jiang Hang had never imagined that the identity of a mere consultant would involve something like this.
He waved from afar at Kogoro Mouri, Conan, and the others. When the director of the production heard that Jiang Hang had arrived, he came forward with a face full of enthusiasm.
"Mr. Jiang Hang, I'm the director, Gondō Taketoshi. Have you come to provide consulting guidance for our production? This is truly an honor for our crew." The director was almost excessively enthusiastic, as though Jiang Hang had helped him with something before.
But when the director quietly said to Jiang Hang, "We really have you to thank for what happened to Xiao Zhongda," Jiang Hang immediately understood.
Although Xiao Zhongda was no good person, his network of connections had indeed spread far and wide. It was only because Jiang Hang had directly struck at Xiao Zhongda's weak point that he had fallen so completely.
Jiang Hang had left the matter to Chihiro Ayasato. The hard drive and account books containing compromising information on quite a few important figures had been secretly destroyed not long ago.
Chihiro Ayasato was still busy handling the more troublesome follow-up matters, working from morning until night every day.
As for Xiao Zhongda's downfall, ordinary people naturally would not know of Jiang Hang. But those with connections could find out some things, since Jiang Hang was merely low-profile rather than deliberately concealing himself.
And Gondō Taketoshi, the director standing before him now, was a veteran director with quite a reputation in the industry. He knew about Xiao Zhongda and what Jiang Hang had done.
He had suffered quite a few losses at Xiao Zhongda's hands before. Now that Xiao Zhongda had been sent to prison because of Jiang Hang, he no longer had to worry about being blackmailed by him. It was therefore no surprise that he was being so enthusiastic toward Jiang Hang.
This middle-aged director, around fifty years old, seemed to realize that he had appeared a little too enthusiastic just now. He immediately turned and lavished praise on Kogoro Mouri in the distance. "Now that our production has both the renowned Kogoro Mouri and Detective Eagle Eye Jiang Hang, our finished work will definitely be even more exciting."
I don't know whether it'll be exciting, but I do know that if I hadn't come, this production would most likely have run into trouble.
Jiang Hang made that sarcastic remark to himself, then quickly explained that he had only come to greet Kogoro Mouri and take a look around the filming location, telling the director not to worry about him.
After Jiang Hang gave him a simple explanation, Kogoro Mouri understood that Jiang Hang had no intention of competing for his consultant position, and immediately burst into laughter.
"So that's it! You saw that I was here, so you came especially to witness and learn from the brilliance of Kogoro Mouri?"
As he spoke, Kogoro Mouri patted Jiang Hang's shoulder with satisfaction. Though he was always getting shown up by this brat Jiang Hang, the other man's flattery still pleased him greatly.
"Then watch carefully! With Miss Yoko Okino as the star, plus the help of Kogoro Mouri, this television drama will definitely go down in Japan's television history!"
Kogoro Mouri declared this smugly to Jiang Hang. As long as Jiang Hang did not interfere with him watching Yoko Okino film from the side, Kogoro Mouri immediately had no complaints about him at all.
"Miss Imai, if you're interested in the drama's script, you can tell that director you're my assistant," Jiang Hang said, looking at Imai Midori beside him. It was her first time visiting a production set, and she was still especially curious. "I helped that director out a little before, so he won't refuse a request like that."
Hearing Jiang Hang's words, Imai Midori immediately thanked him with a face full of gratitude.
After Jiang Hang had talked his way around both Kogoro Mouri and Imai Midori, Conan came over as well.
"You changed female assistants again?" Conan looked at Jiang Hang with a face full of disdain.
In response, Jiang Hang beat Conan up again.
"Don't think such filthy things. She's Shizuka Sakaki's junior, and her goal is to become a screenwriter. She wants to adapt the cases I've encountered into stories, so she's temporarily following me around," Jiang Hang said, glancing at Conan before putting on a sigh. "Honestly, I don't think it's necessary, but seeing how insistent she was, I had no choice but to agree."
"Maybe in a few years, movies about me will be on the big screen. After all, I'm a very low-key person. Just thinking about it gives me quite a headache, Conan. Don't you agree?"
"Oh, right. You, the Sherlock Holmes of the Heisei era, ought to find yourself a 'Watson' to record all your stories too." Jiang Hang's seemingly casual question made Conan grit his teeth.
This bastard was completely showing off in front of him, wasn't he?!
Conan really wanted to say that he was not the least bit jealous, envious, or resentful. He simply could not stand the way the other guy was flaunting it.
But in truth, he really was jealous!
He had been working toward becoming a detective like Sherlock Holmes for years, solving more than a hundred cases of all sizes, yet now even his "Moriarty" had appeared in the form of the Black Organization. Meanwhile, there was still not even the faintest sign of his "Watson."
Why had Jiang Hang, who had only debuted a month ago, already found a fan willing to write his biography?!
But seeing the smug look Jiang Hang wore before him, Conan could only force himself to look unconcerned.
"That's only because I never thought about such things before. It won't be too late to talk about it once my body changes back," Conan said, thinking about what he would do after returning to his original form. Then he looked at Jiang Hang again. "Anyway, let's drop that topic for now. What did you come here for? You can't possibly have come just to show off in front of me, right?"
Conan glanced at Kogoro Mouri, who had already eagerly gone over to offer Yoko Okino a towel and water. "Don't tell me you're a fan of Yoko Okino too?"
Hearing Conan ask what he was doing here, Jiang Hang immediately began grumbling inwardly.
Why did I come here? You little god of death seriously have no idea?
On the surface, however, Jiang Hang told Conan that he had come to this area to look for something for another client, and had happened to see Conan and the others, so he stopped by for a look.
"Seeing such a big group of you gathered here, I thought you'd run into another murder case. I only found out after asking that you were filming here," Jiang Hang said, looking toward the set in the distance where filming was underway. "With your father-in-law involved, how is this television drama coming along?"
They seemed to be filming a scene where the female lead, during an argument caused by a misunderstanding, accidentally stabbed the male lead to death.
Since it was a suspense thriller, the entire set had a rather oppressive atmosphere. Combined with the blood effects made from red dye by the props team, it really did look somewhat horrifying. An ordinary person walking over might genuinely think they had stumbled onto a crime scene.
Conan rolled his eyes at Jiang Hang's words, directly ignoring the "father-in-law" Jiang Hang had mentioned. "The deduction parts are passable. There's nothing particularly brilliant, but there aren't any obvious flaws either. How it turns out will still depend on post-production, though. This drama has quite a few stars, so barring any surprises, its ratings should be decent."
As he said this, he questioned Jiang Hang's earlier remark again. "And what do you mean, you thought I'd run into another murder case? Murder cases aren't that easy to come across. It's not like I run into one every day, okay?"
But after saying that, Conan could not help propping his chin on one hand and falling into thought. "Come to think of it, I don't know what's going on, but public safety in Tokyo really hasn't been great lately. It feels like murders have been happening much more often than before."
No, the frequency of murder cases had not actually increased. Jiang Hang silently refuted Conan's words.
In fact, Jiang Hang had asked Takagi Wataru about this just a few days ago. The answer he got was that the number of murders in Tokyo last month had not risen significantly. Conan had merely "happened" to run into those murder cases.
Seeing Conan's complete lack of self-awareness, Jiang Hang could not help sighing.
He never wanted that kind of "beloved by the world" treatment for the rest of his life.
Because of Conan, Jiang Hang took another walk around the area near the production set, but he did not find anything suspicious.
On the other hand, Imai Midori really was the kind of person who quickly warmed up to others. After getting a copy of the script from the production staff, she was now earnestly discussing issues related to it with the screenwriter off to one side.
She had a good personality, worked hard, and possessed talent. A girl like Imai Midori only needed the right opportunity to make a name for herself in this industry.
Not wanting to disturb the girl as she worked hard to improve herself, Jiang Hang returned to Conan's side.
"You didn't find some clue again, did you?" Seeing Jiang Hang take a lap outside, Conan asked with some concern.
He had already begun to grow accustomed to Jiang Hang's inhuman powers of observation. And after knowing Jiang Hang for so long, Conan's mindset had gradually shifted from the standard process of "discover a case, search for clues, find the culprit" to "stop the culprit before the crime happens."
It just was not an easy thing to do. In the several cases he had encountered recently, he had actually sensed that something was wrong before the crimes took place, but in the end, he had still failed to prevent them.
Conan even occasionally had thoughts like this: rather than calling Jiang Hang over to clean things up after a case happened, it would be better to call him over to take a look the moment Conan sensed something was off.
Of course, that could not happen. As a detective, Conan would not allow himself to think of asking someone else for help whenever he encountered a difficulty, and Jiang Hang could not possibly have that much time to help him.
Hearing Conan's question, Jiang Hang spread his hands. "I found a few things, but most of them are irrelevant."
For example, someone in the props department had cut corners somewhere and pocketed kickbacks; one male actor was wearing hidden elevator shoes more than ten centimeters high; and a cameraman had secretly gathered evidence of another male actor's affair. It looked like he was planning to use those photos to blackmail him.
