Background

Shinichi Kudo was a celebrated high school detective whose deductions regularly assisted the police. After being administered APTX4869 by the Black Organization, he survived but regressed into the body of a child. He adopted the name Conan Edogawa and began living with the Mouri family while concealing his identity. The Black Organization recorded Shinichi’s status as “Unknown,” rather than confirmed dead. 1 53 65

Shortly after shrinking, Conan encountered Jiang Hang, but fled because he was still highly vigilant. Their first substantial cooperation came through the Detective Boys’ treasure-map case, where Conan was skeptical that Jiang Hang’s newly opened detective agency could offer meaningful help. 3

Jiang Hang eventually learned Conan’s true identity during a staged Black Organization kidnapping orchestrated with Yusaku and Yukiko Kudo. The incident was intended to force Conan to recognize the danger of his reckless investigations. Conan nevertheless chose to remain in Japan, after which he and Jiang Hang formed an unofficial partnership against the Black Organization. 33 34 35

Conan appears as a young elementary school boy, though he is actually the seventeen-year-old Shinichi Kudo in a regressed body. His ordinary appearance is a central part of his cover identity.
