Background
The Kurta Clan lived in seclusion because their Scarlet Eyes were prized by collectors as one of the Seven Most Beautiful Colors. Their eyes normally appear ordinary, turning scarlet only under emotional agitation; extreme rage produces the most vivid red. 73
The Phantom Troupe massacred the Kurta village and took the clan's eyes. Kurapika survived only because he had received permission to leave the village at the time. The atrocity left him traumatized and near collapse during the following year, but he committed himself to avenging his people and recovering every stolen pair of eyes. 73 80
Appearance
Kurapika is a blonde-haired youth whose Scarlet Eyes emerge when his emotions become unstable. He initially wore distinctive Kurta Clan clothing, but later adopted less conspicuous attire to avoid exposing his identity. 88 89 143
- Blonde hair and somber features. 80 88
- Scarlet Eyes activated by anger, grief, or emotional agitation. 73 260
- Initially wore a blue-and-white striped Kurta-style outer garment. 89
- Later appears in common clothing, a sharp black suit, and specially made contact lenses with wide-brimmed sunglasses. 143 347
- Conjures chains around his right hand when using Nen. 192 209
Personality
Kurapika began as fragile, sensitive, and deeply burdened by the massacre of his people. His grief made him intensely reactive to references to the Kurta Clan and Scarlet Eyes, though he gradually learned to regulate his emotions and present a calm, composed exterior. 89 138 231
His determination can become ruthless. While pursuing the Phantom Troupe, he beat a swindler for false information and accepted that revenge might turn him into something he despised. 192 He is nevertheless fundamentally compassionate: his healing ability places the cost of treatment on himself rather than on those he heals. 209 357
Over time, Kurapika becomes disciplined, meticulous, and strategically minded. He prepares thoroughly for his responsibilities as a Hunter Exam examiner, chooses opponents based on tactical advantage, and can quickly devise countermeasures under pressure. 246 294 354
Abilities & Skills
Scarlet Eyes
Kurapika's Kurta bloodline causes his eyes to turn scarlet when he is emotionally agitated.
- Enhances his Nen capabilities when active. 194
- Emotional instability can trigger the Scarlet Eyes involuntarily. 89 231
- Prolonged activation places severe strain on his concentration, mind, and body. 194 195
Absolute Time
A Specialization ability activated alongside the Scarlet Eyes.
- Allows Kurapika to use every Nen category at 100% effectiveness. 194
- Lets his chains combine the power, precision, and adaptability normally unavailable to a single Nen category. 194
- Burns his lifespan as its restriction. 317
- In his early confrontation with Feitan, he could not sustain the state for more than roughly a minute. 194
Chain Jail
Kurapika's defensive chain ability automatically responds to hostile intent.
- Detects killing intent and warns him of approaching threats. 262 309
- Automatically intercepts attacks, including conventional and Nen-enhanced bullets. 194 262
- Can extend, retract, and alter its size during combat. 194 232
- Its automatic defense does not react to actions performed without hostility, as Ging demonstrates by disarming it without triggering a countermeasure. 262
Index Finger Binding Chain
A controlling chain designed to neutralize Phantom Troupe members.
- Can force a bound Phantom Troupe member into Zetsu. 194 236
- Requires Kurapika to accurately restrain the target, making fast or cautious opponents difficult to capture. 194 196
- Kurapika uses it to kill Pakunoda by piercing her heart. 250
Chain of Finger Tracking
A tracking and counterattack-oriented chain developed specifically for use against Phantom Troupe members.
- Possesses automatic homing, interception, and defensive capabilities. 193
- Its specialized effects apply only to Phantom Troupe members under its Vow and Restriction. 193
- Later gains lie-detection functionality, allowing Kurapika to verify testimony without resorting to violence. 299
Chain of Healing
A cross-tipped chain that accelerates healing at the expense of Kurapika's life.
- Instantly heals severe wounds, including deep cuts and broken bones. 209
- Can be used on others; Kurapika himself bears the lifespan cost. 209 317
- Cannot activate if Kurapika feels regret over using it. 357
- When used alongside Absolute Time, the combined mental and physical burden can leave him nearly unconscious. 317
- Its extreme application can regenerate lost limbs, though Beyond's residual will made Moro's treatment take more than a week. 357
Combat Skill
Kurapika combines physical training, chain control, and Nen tactics rather than relying solely on Absolute Time.
- Fought through Heaven's Arena and reached the 20th floor soon after beginning his training. 138 144
- Uses In to conceal chain attacks. 194
- Employs a two-chain technique modeled after Moro's Tiger Bite Fist, using one visible chain and one hidden chain to attack from separate angles. 194
- Can control two chains simultaneously for defense and lethal counterattacks. 262
- Initially trained with wooden twin swords before learning Nen. 84 88
Relationships
- Moro — Benefactor, Nen initiator, combat guide, and closest ally in Kurapika's campaign against the Phantom Troupe and recovery of the Scarlet Eyes. Kurapika repeatedly entrusts Moro with his safety and later risks his own life to regenerate Moro's limbs. 143 144 209 348 357
- Pairo — Kurapika's childhood best friend. Discovering Pairo's preserved head in Tserriednich's collection devastates Kurapika and reinforces his resolve to return the Scarlet Eyes to their homeland. 348 357
- Kalluto Zoldyck — Ally and training partner. Kurapika initially fears Kalluto after witnessing her brutality, but later travels and trains alongside her under Moro. 88 208 214
- Biscuit Krueger — Observes Kurapika's talent and later assists with Moro's difficult recovery while Kurapika uses Chain of Healing. 144 357
- Menchi — Ally who works with Kurapika during the Yorknew fundraising effort and helps lure mafia attackers into a counterattack. 262 263
- Ging Freecss — Provides information that helps Kurapika locate holders of the Scarlet Eyes. Ging also exposes the hostility-detection limitation of Kurapika's Chain Jail. 262 263 278
- Phantom Troupe — The murderers of the Kurta Clan and Kurapika's central enemies. His chain abilities and life-risking restrictions were shaped around defeating them. 73 193 194
- Feitan — Kurapika's first direct Troupe target. Feitan overwhelms him with speed and pressure until Moro intervenes, teaching Kurapika the importance of preparation and information. 194 195
- Pakunoda — Kurapika defeats and kills her after her Memory Bullet enhancement fails to overcome his Chain Jail and Absolute Time. 250
Story Role / Major Arcs
Search for Strength
After arriving in Yorknew City to pursue the Phantom Troupe and the stolen Scarlet Eyes, Kurapika witnesses Kalluto's violence and Moro's superior strength. The experience gives him a direct goal: learn Nen and become strong enough to pursue revenge. 80 88
Moro warns him that his Kurta attire makes him a target, gives him an auction admission ticket, and eventually agrees to open his aura nodes. Kurapika then enters Heaven's Arena, where watching Moro defeat Maury further motivates him to grow. 89 138 143 144
Phantom Troupe Pursuit
Kurapika completes his initial Nen training and begins actively searching for Troupe members. His first clashes reveal both the extraordinary power of his chains and his lack of experience against faster, more seasoned Nen users. 192 194
He survives Feitan's assault only through his defensive abilities and Moro's intervention. Later, during the larger conflict with the Troupe, he endures a three-on-one battle against Chrollo, Uvogin, and Nobunaga, using Chain of Healing to remain in the fight. 195 237 238
Kurapika ultimately kills Pakunoda and receives recognition as a One-Star Professional Hunter for the operation that eliminated the Phantom Troupe, though he credits Moro as the principal contributor. 250 262
Recovery of the Scarlet Eyes
With the Troupe gone, Kurapika focuses on locating and recovering his clansmen's eyes. He assists Moro in securing pairs at the Yorknew auction, receives intelligence from Ging's network, and undertakes much of the remaining recovery work alone. 260 270 278
He uses Chain of Healing to cure a terminally ill man in exchange for a pair of Scarlet Eyes, bringing his total to ten pairs. 317 While working for the Ai Family, Kurapika and Moro infiltrate Tserriednich's collection, where Kurapika finds Pairo's head and the remaining Scarlet Eyes. 347 348
Hunter Exam Examiner and Return Home
Kurapika serves as the fourth-phase Hunter Exam examiner, designing a written test that rewards observation, honesty, and strategic thinking. He uses Chain of Finger Tracking to verify examinees' final answers. 294 296 299
After recovering the Scarlet Eyes from the Secret Realm, Kurapika returns to the Kurta homeland to lay his people to rest. He chooses to remain near their resting place, believing his remaining lifespan is limited by the repeated cost of his abilities. 357 359
Notable Quotes
“I bear witness with my Scarlet Eyes.” 359
Trivia
- Kurapika has no interest in his One-Star title; recovering the Scarlet Eyes remains more important to him than fame or rank. 262
- He deliberately changed his appearance after Moro warned that Kurta clothing could expose him to collectors and criminals. 89 143
- His decision to add lie detection to Chain of Finger Tracking stems from his desire to avoid using torture against the people he questions. 299
