History
Pursuit of the Phantom Troupe
Hisoka arrives in Kanda City to pursue the Phantom Troupe. His objective is to take the Troupe’s No. 4 position by targeting its current holder rather than waiting for Chrollo to recruit him. 53 54
During Silva’s clash with the Troupe, Hisoka declines an easy opportunity to assassinate Machi from behind, instead directing his cards at Omokage. He separates Omokage from the main fight and defeats Omokage’s Soul Dolls, though Omokage escapes with a replica doll. 56 58
Rivalry with Moro
After Moro kills Omokage, Hisoka pursues him through the city with Bungee Gum, driven by the killing satisfaction he senses in Moro’s aura. Moro evades him and proposes a bet: if Hisoka cannot kill him, they will maintain a one-year “cold war.” Hisoka loses the chase when Moro escapes on a Flying Star. 60 62
Despite repeatedly finding Moro afterward, Hisoka honors the agreement rather than forcing an incomplete fight. When the deadline approaches at Heaven’s Arena, he acknowledges Moro’s growth and leaves a joker card behind, promising to wait until Moro can fight without holding back. 68 122
Hisoka later confronts Moro outside town, using concealed Bungee Gum on Moro’s weapon and attempting to force a decisive duel. Moro exploits the open terrain and defeats him with Deceptive Flying Stars, then recruits him as an inside informant against the Phantom Troupe in exchange for another match at Heaven’s Arena. 201 202
Exposure as the Mole
Hisoka supplies Moro with information on Phantom Troupe meetings and movements, even after falling into debt from spending his money to locate Moro. 199 209 218
Chrollo eventually learns that Hisoka is the informant through Illumi. Pakunoda shoots Hisoka with a concealed lethal Nen Bullet, and Illumi—disguised as Hisoka—blocks his escape route. Hisoka fights despite being encircled by the Troupe, but is ultimately killed after wounding Uvogin and Nobunaga. Before the battle, he crushes his phone to prevent it from being used against Moro. 228 230
Renewed Conflict with Chrollo and Moro
Hisoka later appears again when Moro gives him an opportunity to fight Chrollo. Chrollo initially prioritizes Moro and his companions over Hisoka, provoking Hisoka into attacking aggressively. Their duel becomes a tactical exchange between Bungee Gum and Chrollo’s Empathy, before Moro intervenes and severely injures Chrollo. 246 249
Hunter Exam
Anxious over Moro’s disappearance, Hisoka enters the 286th Hunter Exam to find him. He terrorizes other applicants by inspecting them for signs of Moro’s disguise, earning the nickname “Spotted Hyena Hisoka.” His presence is feared because he had killed multiple examinees and an examiner during the previous year’s exam, resulting in his disqualification. 274 275 283
After locating Moro through Kalluto’s Paper Person of Life, Hisoka reluctantly allows Moro to continue the exam rather than fight immediately. He later challenges Moro atop a martial-arts holy land, where his rubberized-body technique lets him endure heavy damage; Moro still defeats him and leaves him unconscious. 287 288 301 303
Later Activities
Hisoka joins Moro’s side in the dodgeball match against Razor, using Bungee Gum to destroy one of Razor’s Nen Beasts and attempt to reclaim the ball. 341 342
He continues seeking Moro in East Gorteau, disregarding Moro’s disguises and accepting another arranged fight. After Moro gains Neferpitou’s death-enhanced Nen, Hisoka underestimates the scale of Moro’s growth and is instantly defeated in an abandoned urban area. 391 422
Appearance
Hisoka’s deliberately conspicuous look stands out even in crowded public spaces. He has spiked red hair, tear-shaped cheek makeup, and golden pupils. 53 60
- Often carries and fights with playing cards.
- Has worn cinched clothing and pointed heeled boots as part of his usual style. 229
- His aura projects intense desire, killing intent, and barely restrained excitement, frightening even experienced Nen users. 60 72 201
Personality
Hisoka is wholly committed to the pleasure of one-on-one life-or-death combat. He views people through the roles of hunter and prey, pursuing opponents who can offer him a satisfying fight rather than simple victories. He is willing to wait for opponents to grow, temporarily compromise, or assist others when doing so may lead to a better battle later. 122 201 391
He is perceptive, patient, and highly principled about the conditions of combat. He refuses to casually interfere in certain fights, avoids fighting several Troupe members at once when it would amount to suicide, and can suppress his urges for extended periods to preserve the prospect of a more perfect confrontation. 57 68 229
Hisoka is also manipulative and unsettling around weaker people. He coerces Kalluto into using the Paper Person of Life by threatening Killua, and his obsessive search for Moro causes widespread fear among Hunter Exam applicants. 275 287 288
Abilities & Skills
Bungee Gum
Hisoka’s signature Transmutation ability gives his Nen the properties of both rubber and chewing gum. 62
- Attaches invisible adhesive threads to cards, weapons, terrain, and targets using In. 201 248
- Propels him through cities or forests by anchoring threads and using their contraction force. 60 62
- Absorbs and redirects gunfire. 70
- Pulls opponents or objects toward him, including Killua and playing cards. 287 248
- Is less effective in open areas with few anchor points, limiting Hisoka’s mobility and control options. 202
Rubberized Body
Hisoka can transform his body into a rubber-like state while distributing Nen throughout it. 302 303
- Dissipates much of the force from punches, collisions, and other blunt attacks. 303
- Allows extreme flexibility and elastic bursts of movement. 229 302
- Supports whip-like arm attacks with extended range; playing cards compensate for their lower destructive force. 303
- Does not prevent defeat when Moro overwhelms him through prediction, ranged pressure, and deceptive attacks. 303 422
Playing Cards and Flicker
Hisoka uses Nen-infused playing cards as cutting projectiles and as anchors for Bungee Gum. 56 229
- Can conceal Bungee Gum on cards with In. 248
- Uses Flicker to split a thrown card into multiple cards. 248
- Used Flicker to conceal the burnt portions of a roasted pig during the Hunter Exam. 290
- His rapid ability activation and card handling are regarded as major strengths in combat. 122
Nen Mastery and Combat Senses

- Reads aura patterns to assess opponents’ Nen categories and intentions. 61
- Detects minute killing intent, allowing him to partially defend against Pakunoda’s surprise lethal bullet. 229
- Uses refined close-quarters combat and aura allocation to react under pressure. 122 248
- Often permits opponents to reveal their full abilities before attempting to subdue them. 246
False Masquerade
