History
Yuzuru Hyuga had already maximized the basic Substitution Technique by the time he sparred with Itachi Uchiha. When Itachi reflexively slashed at his neck with a kunai, Yuzuru disappeared in smoke, left a wooden stump in his place, and immediately counterattacked from behind. 6
During his training bout with Shisui Uchiha, Yuzuru used the technique as a short-range movement tool. He substituted away from an incoming kunai and reappeared inside Shisui's guard, allowing him to initiate close-quarters combat. 8
After breaking through the technique, Yuzuru named its B-rank evolution Shadow Fold. Rather than merely substituting a log, Shadow Fold creates a clone-like stand-in that can deceive an opponent into misjudging the battlefield. 15 He later used it against Root ninja, allowing a decoy to appear consumed by a combined Fire and Wind Release attack before descending from above to launch the Eight Trigrams: Sixty-Four Palms. 34
