Background and History

Velen was an outstanding arcane mage and one of the Eredar’s two Grand Executors, ruling alongside his close friend and sworn brother Kil’jaeden. His prophetic visions began in childhood. As his interest in the Naaru and their teachings grew, he repeatedly foresaw himself leading his people under the Holy Light’s protection 2 4 16.

During the Awakeners’ Cult coup, Velen teleported a group from the Naaru Temple to Oronaar City and joined its defense. He subsequently converted to the Holy Light to purify the Fel Well. The conversion also brought him into the demigod realm 14 19.

When visions warned him of a future without Kil’jaeden, Velen resolved to fight that fate rather than abandon his brother. During Argus’s evacuation, he raised a Holy Light barrier over most of Oronaar City to protect shelters awaiting rescue. He survived the fighting and awoke aboard the Genedar to learn that Kil’jaeden was gone 25 31 34 41.

Velen and Hutton then coordinated the scattered Eredar ships. Velen presented plans for the Army of the Light and a Lightforged Fleet, while the Genedar’s Draenei Clan undertook a long journey that drew the Burning Legion’s attention away from other exiles. After the Genedar’s crash, his injuries left him in intermittent comas; his health improved only gradually 43 68 643.

Much later, Velen saved and released Kil’jaeden so his brother could return to Argus and guide the Penitents. He accepted arrest for releasing a Greater Demon Lord 765. At Auchindoun, Velen said farewell to his son Eredath, took up Frostmourne and entered death for the sake of the Eredar. He continued to pray to the Holy Light even after becoming a god of death 803 830.

Appearance

Velen has blue Eredar features, a high forehead, faintly glowing eyes and a carefully groomed black beard. After his conversion, he exchanged his arcane ruler’s robes for platinum-white redeemer’s robes 19.

Personality

Velen favors protection, healing and peace, but will fight directly when his people are threatened. His determination to save Kil’jaeden led him first to resist a prophecy and, much later, to accept judgment for releasing him 31 161 765.

He places great trust in prophecy, a tendency Diakum regards as a flaw. Velen nevertheless recognizes the danger of blind faith: he and Kil’jaeden agreed to help keep his judgment rational, and Velen later supported measures intended to prevent Lightforged recruits from falling into fanaticism 16 19 534.

Velen has seen fragments of possible futures since his youth and is regarded as the greatest prophet in Eredar history 16 25.

• Uses the Atama Crystal as an aid when interpreting major prophecies 25.

Velen’s doctrine emphasizes protection and healing. His defenses can shelter a city, while his offensive Holy Light can destroy lesser demons 34 161.
