Background
Lothar descends from the true royal bloodline of the Arathor Empire. His branch left the Northern Borderlands amid destructive disputes over imperial legitimacy, and he was raised in Stormwind rather than his ancestral homeland. Before the Orc invasion, he had no wish to restore the empire; his sole priority was protecting Stormwind and aiding his sworn brother, King Llane Wrynn. 187
As Stormwind's marshal, he responded to General Gavinrad's report that roughly four hundred thousand Orcs had entered Azeroth. He reinforced the Redridge Mountains, recognized the value of its narrow passes, and supported seeking help from the Bronzebeard Dwarves despite the human kingdoms' political divisions. 187
Personality
Lothar is duty-driven rather than power-seeking. He initially resists the imperial destiny attached to his bloodline, but accepts it when convinced that only united human leadership can survive the Orc and demonic invasions. 201 224
He is pragmatic in war and politics: he favors diplomacy, attrition, supply-line disruption, and alliances over reckless heroics. He also takes responsibility personally, struggling with guilt after battlefield losses and with the burden of governing Stormwind during Llane's incapacitation. 209 212 240
Though serious in command, he retains a warm, teasing rapport with those close to him, including Varian and Llane. 187
Abilities & Skills
Military Command
Lothar is an experienced commander who leads from the front while organizing large-scale campaigns.
- Exploits terrain and ambushes, including the Redridge operation against Orc scouts. 199
- Advocates an attritional strategy against the Orcs by cutting supply lines and using diplomacy to build support. 212
- Coordinates allied formations of humans, Dalaran mages, Light Weavers, Worgen, elves, dwarves, and Draenor forces. 316 498 512
- Leads the Seventh Legion through the northern campaign, Stromgarde's liberation, and the assault on Lordaeron. 497 498 519
Holy Light Paladin
After choosing the Holy Light, Lothar develops into a battle-capable paladin.
- Uses Flash of Light to close wounds and restore his stamina mid-duel. 378
- Possesses Divine Shield and Lay on Hands, though he does not need either during his duel with Orgrim Doomhammer. 378
- His retribution and determination harden through prolonged war and personal hardship. 378
Heart of Azeroth
The World Mother grants Lothar the Heart of Azeroth as humanity's representative.
- Gives him access to the World Mother's blessing in decisive battles. 352 766
- Allows him to defeat a leading Pit Lord during the battle for Stromgarde. 498
- Its use carries political and moral weight; Lothar considers whether such power should be spent in mortal conflicts. 352
Guardian of Kings
Emperor Thoradin's spirit becomes Lothar's Guardian of Kings after accepting him as successor.
- Thoradin initially demands that Lothar personally kill 999 demons before recognizing his claim. 303
- Lothar can summon the Guardian of Kings to fight beside him, including during the Mount Hyjal campaign. 304 368
Equipment
- Strom'kar, the Warbreaker — Emperor Thoradin's ancestral sword and the “Emperor's Sword.” Lothar receives it with Thoradin's spirit attached, later gifts it to the Arathi Empire to reinforce unity between the two empires. 303 636
- Lion's Roar Battle Armor — Growth-type enchanted adamantite and mithril armor originally forged by Medivh for Lothar. It adapts to its wearer and was later consecrated into a Holy Light divine artifact. 202 380

Story Role / Major Arcs
Defense of Stormwind
Lothar organizes Stormwind's defense when the Orc Horde emerges from the Black Morass. He leads forces in Redridge, survives an attack by Drake Lord Lethon, and confronts the scale of the invasion after heavy losses. 187 199 209
When plague, war, and Llane's injury leave Stormwind vulnerable, he takes responsibility for both its military and civil affairs. He contracts the defensive perimeter, sends civilians to Karazhan, and seeks support from Draenor. 212 240
Acceptance of the Imperial Duty
After being treated at Karazhan, Lothar is confronted by Diakum, Aegwynn, Farodis, and Meryl with his bloodline's duty: rebuild a united human empire. He accepts the responsibility and agrees to a marriage alliance with Daenerys. 201
He later formally chooses the Holy Light, reasoning that becoming only a stronger warrior would not be enough to prevent his country from falling. 224
War Against the Horde
Lothar leads the Iron Horse Knights through the Orc war, receives Strom'kar, and fights across Azeroth alongside Draenor's expeditionary forces. 316 318
At Mount Hyjal, he commands human cavalry within a multinational force against demons. He later defeats Orgrim Doomhammer in a brutal duel, reflecting his transformation from an ordinary legendary warrior into a hardened paladin. 368 378
Founding the Human Empire
Following the chaos in the Northern Borderlands, Lothar launches campaigns to reclaim human lands and gathers the allegiance of Dalaran, the Arathi knights, and other allied forces. 390 497
After Stromgarde's liberation, he names his future state the Warbreaker Empire. 501
War Against Lordaeron
Lothar leads the Alliance against Terenas's Dragonborn regime, breaking through Silverpine Forest and launching a surprise sewer assault into Lordaeron City. 518 519
He enters the royal city with a King-Capturing Squad and duels Terenas in the throne room. Void Essences interrupt the fight and let Terenas flee, but Arthas ultimately kills his father after the Holy Light weakens the Dragon King. 523 526
Coronation and the Strom'kar Empire
Lothar formally organizes the empire's military, promoting seventeen commanders to generals and appointing Uther, Danath, and Bolvar as regional marshals. His long-term plan is to centralize military authority first while gradually reclaiming administrative power from former kings. 601
He is crowned Emperor of the Strom'kar Empire in Stromgarde. To demonstrate trust toward the Arathi Empire, he gives them Strom'kar rather than retaining the Emperor's Sword as a symbol of his own legitimacy. 636
Kul Tiras Campaign
After receiving reports that Kul Tiras is becoming a Void stronghold, Lothar promises a landing campaign once the Northern Borderlands are stabilized. 546
He leads the Imperial Army from Drustvar, assigns SI:7 to target the Storm Temple, and directs rapid offensives supported by Dalaran and Steel Knight war mechs. 609 610
