Background / History
Jack lived in Moen City’s impoverished old building. Despite extreme poverty and frequently going hungry, he tried to remain helpful, polite, and cheerful. His room was left open so neighbors could seek his help, and he considered even their burdens a form of happiness. He worked as a performer and acrobat, hoping to bring laughter to others even as his troupe declined. 7
He cared deeply for his mother, who lived in a nursing home, and concealed his hardship from her so she would not blame herself for his condition. He considered Remian a colleague, Anderson his sole close friend, Yulia someone connected to Jennifer, and Jennifer his most meaningful companion. 7
Jack did not love Yulia; his attachment to her stemmed from his wish to spend time with Jennifer. He genuinely enjoyed Jennifer’s company, and Jennifer was happier with him than with other adults. Jack did not share this affection for children generally, suggesting that their connection was unusually specific. 11 13
A corruptor posing as a doctor manipulated Jack’s fate. The false diagnosis, Remian’s slander, Anderson’s betrayal, Yulia’s rejection, and the planned murder of Jack’s mother were arranged to break him completely. In the doctor-altered trajectory underlying the initial Tower of Deception scenario, his mother’s death destroys his remaining sanity, leading him to kill Jennifer after she turns back toward Yulia. 12 13
Before the doctor’s interference, Jack had neither received the stomach-cancer diagnosis nor lost his mother. Although Remian and Anderson still betrayed him, he retained enough humanity to spare Jennifer. His transformation itself was inevitable rather than a consequence of the suffering the doctor engineered. 11 13
Wen Xishu intervenes by exposing the manipulation, saving Jack’s mother, and persuading Jack to protect Jennifer through the coming disaster. This changes the Tower of Desire scenario and causes Jack’s Fatal Deceptive Tower to restart with a new history: Jack and Jennifer become mutually protective monsters rather than victim and killer. 13 14
In the revised history, Jack and his mother disappear for several days before the world changes. After Yulia abandons Jennifer to secure her own escape, Jennifer seeks Jack’s protection. Jack also takes revenge on Remian and Anderson: Remian becomes a dead man without a mouth, while Anderson’s fate is compared to meat stored indefinitely in Jack’s refrigerator. 14
Wen Xishu’s Level Six completion anchors the revised outcome. The Guide explains that later challengers cannot overwrite the changes he made to Jack and Jennifer’s trajectories in this area. The same achievement unlocks the prerequisites for recruiting Slaughter Jack and Slaughter Jennifer. 14 17
Jack and Jennifer subsequently remain together in Moen City. They hunt rats and wandering monsters, and become associated with Gemini after their reunion satisfies his criteria. Jack states that neither of them has received Gemini’s blessing, but appreciates his wish that they continue to treasure each other. 111
Appearance
Jack’s appearance changes drastically between his human life and his Tower manifestations.
- Before transformation — Extremely thin and often hungry; wore clown makeup during performances. 7
- Ghoul Jack — His face is covered with stitched-on facial parts taken from residents: four eyes, two crooked noses, and four irregular ears; only his own mouth remains visible beneath the composite mask. 7
- Deception Jack — Exceptionally tall and thin, with a decayed arm exposing white bone. His mask retains the composite eyes, ears, and noses of his victims. 14
- Slaughter Jack — Known to Tower of Slaughter explorers as the Face-stitcher. 32
- Later facial maintenance — During his reunion with Wen Xishu in Moen City, Jack uses a needle and thread to stitch the human skin on his face. 163
Personality
Before his fall, Jack is unusually trusting, gentle, and self-sacrificing. When Wen Xishu enters his home without permission, Jack’s first response is to ask whether the stranger needs help. He is candid with Wen Xishu, readily sharing private information because he believes their shared concern for Jennifer makes them friends. 11
Jack wants to be remembered as a good person and repeatedly rationalizes the cruelty of people who exploit him. He attempts to reconcile with Remian, intends to leave his savings to Anderson, and hides his suffering from his mother. 7
His kindness is not limitless. Betrayal and grief turn his need for connection into obsession, resentment, and violence. As Ghoul Jack, he hunts Jennifer through the building while projecting his thoughts and grievances into the environment. 6 8
After Wen Xishu changes his fate, Deception Jack retains a friendly disposition toward Jennifer and recognizes Wen Xishu as a rare human friend. 14
His later written messages are serious and formal, contrasting with his grotesque grin and readiness to peel off people’s faces. He expresses satisfaction with life in Moen City because it supplies rats and wandering monsters to eat, and describes enjoying the city’s many sick individuals as prey. 111
Jack’s gratitude toward Wen Xishu is substantial enough that he gives away a unique power and subsequently loses access to it. After mistaking Wen Xishu’s long-distance communication for an extraordinarily advanced mental ability, he becomes deferential and regards his own gift as meager beside Wen Xishu’s presumed strength. Nevertheless, he remains willing to share his experience with Mental Barrage. 110 111
Abilities & Skills
Mental Barrage
Jack’s thoughts can materialize as environmental phenomena. His desperate search for Jennifer manifests as worms forming messages across the walls, while his resentment produces auditory and visual projections. 8 18
- Materializes inner thoughts at particular moments as a summoning-type effect. 18
- Can reveal the extreme emotions of observed targets as bullet comments visible only to the user. 18
- Can cause the user’s own peak emotions to appear as bullet comments to specific targets. 18
- Materialized bullet comments can be controlled with sufficient Tower Power. 18
- Jack uses the ability to broadcast his voice, form worm-written messages, and create a false projection of Yulia to lure Jennifer into looking back. 8
- Its advanced manifestations appear capable of producing causal effects; the monster compendium associates Slaughter Jack’s Eerie Sequence with curses that can alter fate. 32
The Tower Power requirement appears in the Sequence description received by Wen Xishu. Jack later explains that his own method of materialization relied on sufficient emotion and imposed an enormous cost, despite his having no knowledge of Tower Power. Wen Xishu concludes that Gifted beings such as Jack and Bunker humans do not activate these powers through the same system. 18 163
Jack does not permanently retain this ability after granting it to Wen Xishu. He explicitly confirms that the unique power disappeared from his body some time after the gift. His later explanation provides insight into its operation but does not explicitly establish its restoration. 111 163
Slaughter Sequence: Flesh Stripping
Slaughter Jack possesses Flesh Stripping as his first-stage Slaughter Sequence. Its specific effects are not described. 32
Second-Stage Manifestations
When Slaughter Jack becomes enraged, resentment from his mind takes physical form as summoned entities. 32
- Summoned manifestations can serve as weapons.
- Summoned manifestations can serve as defensive shields.
- This second stage is considered more dangerous than Flesh Stripping. 32
The compendium’s description predates Jack’s confirmation that the associated unique power disappeared after its transfer to Wen Xishu. The later account therefore establishes a loss of this portion of his original capabilities rather than confirming that his documented second stage remains unchanged. 32 111
Relationships
- Jennifer — Jack’s closest companion and the child he uniquely wants to protect; their mutual favorability reaches 100 after the scenario restart. They continue living and hunting together in Moen City. Jack supports her determination to kill the rats troubling them and later joins her in accepting an invitation to help Wen Xishu. 6 11 14 111 163 410
- Wen Xishu — Wen Xishu saves Jack’s mother, explains Jennifer’s connection to him, and helps remake his fate. Deception Jack calls Wen Xishu a friend and gives him Deception Jack’s Eerie Sequence. Jack later confirms that the gift cost him the unique ability, offers advice about its use, and is invited to seek help in Wen Xishu’s territory of Wind City if necessary. 13 14 111 163
- Jack’s mother — Jack loves her deeply and hides his hardship to spare her guilt. Her planned murder is intended to trigger his complete descent into madness. Wen Xishu prevents the murder, and the revised history has Jack disappear with her before the apocalypse. 7 12 13 14
- Remian — Jack’s neighbor and colleague. Jack tries to reconcile with him, but Remian repeatedly slanders Jack to Yulia and others. 7 12
- Anderson — Jack believes Anderson is his only true friend and intends to leave him money; Anderson betrays that trust. 7 12
- Yulia — Jennifer’s mother. Jack does not love her, but her rejection of him and removal of Jennifer intensify his despair. 7 11
- The corruptor “Doctor” — A Ruinbringer, also described as a Breaker, who remembers resets and alters Jack’s original fate by arranging the false diagnosis and attempting to murder his mother. Jack plans to torment him after transforming. 12 13
- Gemini — Approaches Jack and Jennifer after their reunion, expressing the hope that they will always treasure each other and predicting another opportunity in Moen City. Jack does not dislike him, despite describing him as the weakest of the twelve gods after the loss of power to his other half. At the time of this account, Jack and Jennifer have not received his blessing. 111
- The rat empowered by Leo — A local rival who once feared approaching Jack and Jennifer. After receiving Leo’s power, the rat begins approaching their level, becoming a persistent source of trouble. 110 111
Story Role / Major Arcs
Jack’s Haunted Building
Ghoul Jack serves as the central threat of the twenty-first-floor Tower of Deception mission. After killing Remian and other residents, he hunts Jennifer through the Loop Building while Wen Xishu attempts to escort her out. 6 8
Jack’s Performance
Wen Xishu and Jennifer witness a performance reconstructing Jack’s final human days. Wen Xishu receives a score of 97 for sharing Ghoul Jack’s violent thoughts, becoming his “confidant” and obtaining an invitation related to Jennifer. 7
Reversing Destiny
In the Tower of Desire, Wen Xishu investigates Jack’s diagnosis and discovers the corruptor’s intervention. By saving Jack’s mother and guiding Jack toward Jennifer’s future, he changes the scenario’s causality. 11 12 13
Jack’s Fatal Deceptive Tower Restart
The revised Tower of Deception scenario has Jennifer seek refuge with Jack rather than flee from him. Deception Jack reunites with her, welcomes Wen Xishu as a friend, and grants him his Eerie Sequence. 14
The restart also unlocks the recruitment prerequisites for Jack and Jennifer’s Slaughter counterparts. Wen Xishu’s Level Six completion makes the altered outcome resistant to replacement by later challengers. 14 17
Slaughter Jack
In the Tower of Slaughter, Jack exists as the unconquered Leader-class Face-stitcher. His second stage demonstrates the advanced offensive and defensive potential of Mental Barrage. 32
Jack’s Deceptive Building is a territory that other dangerous monsters avoid. When Zhang Wei is driven toward it by rats, he recognizes that entering a territorial monster’s area may initiate a boss encounter with little chance of victory. Jack and Jennifer later question a student connected to Wen Xishu while searching for their friend; Wen Xishu’s subsequent account notes that the encounter demonstrated the formidable abilities of Jack’s next-stage form together with Jennifer. 15 163
Long-Distance Reunion and Gemini’s Faction
During Wen Xishu’s first Slaughter Tower journey, Jack and Jennifer join his remote conversation. They interpret his ability to communicate across a great distance as Mental Invasion, mistakenly concluding that he has evolved far beyond them. Jennifer asks him to come to Moen City and help deal with the increasingly powerful rat nearby. 110
Jack confirms that Mental Barrage disappeared from his body after he gave its unique power to Wen Xishu. Although unable to provide further demonstrations, he offers insights from his former use of the ability. He also describes Gemini’s weakened condition, explains that he and Jennifer have not yet received a blessing, and recounts Gemini’s approval of their bond. 111
Storytelling Club Incident
Wen Xishu tells the Storytelling Club a story based on Jack and Jennifer’s search for him, presenting their terrifying encounter with a fellow student in a deliberately misleading way that suggests revenge. During the resulting Incident, he reunites with them in Moen City. 163
Jennifer again asks him to eliminate the nearby rats, but Wen Xishu explains that he is only a weak avatar and cannot help at that moment. He instead invites them to seek assistance in Wind City if they encounter trouble they cannot resolve. Jack considers whether to leave the old building, while Jennifer insists on killing the rats before departing. 163
Wen Xishu’s principal purpose is to ask how Jack gave Mental Barrage physical form. Jack’s explanation—that emotion was sufficient, at great cost, without any knowledge of Tower Power—helps Wen Xishu distinguish the Gifted’s use of Sequences from the Bunker people’s system. 163
Rescue of Wen Xishu 046
When Wen Xishu 046 becomes trapped in a lethal shattered-mirror space, Wen Xishu 001 opens the Golden Gate and seeks assistance from people across the Bunker and the Three Towers Battlefield. In Moen City, Jack and Jennifer accept his invitation without hesitation. 410
Their response forms part of the wider rescue effort by the people connected to 046. The voices reaching him through the mirror fragments help dispel the Black Dust and draw him back from despair. Wen Xishu 001 is surprised that Jack is still alive, remembering the murderous pursuer from his own first Strange Tower climb. 410
Trivia
- Jack’s old refrigerator is implied to contain Anderson’s corpse in the original Deception scenario. 8
- His open apartment door originally reflects his willingness to help neighbors; after his transformation, his room becomes the only place unaffected by his maddening laughter. 7
- Wen Xishu initially worries that Jack may have surrendered the unique Mental Barrage sequence when he granted its Deception-type version to him. Jack later confirms that the power did disappear from his body after the gift. 32 111
- Jack’s account of Gemini makes Wen Xishu more receptive to the weakened constellation: he reasons that if Jack does not dislike Gemini, he probably would not dislike him either. 111
- Jack’s advice about emotion-driven manifestations helps Wen Xishu identify a fundamental difference between native Gifted beings and Bunker humans using their Sequence powers. 163
