Voldemort, who had been affectingly posing before the door at the end of the corridor, sensed the aura. He turned for a single glance, then immediately raised his wand and tried to use magic to knock the incoming Wither Skeleton Skulls aside.

The instant Voldemort confirmed that the Wither Skeleton Skulls could not be deflected by magic, he swiftly pointed his wand at the ground, and a thick stone wall rose from the earth.
But in an instant, the wall was blasted open with a massive hole. A chain of flickering glowing blocks flew through the opening.
"Protego!" Barty Crouch Jr. shouted the incantation, also serving to remind his fellow Death Eaters, who had only just regained their freedom and were still mentally sluggish.
The next moment, Kayson heard a string of crackling explosions. The stone wall Voldemort had created, along with the entire entrance to Azkaban, was blown away without a trace.

Another burst of spell explosions rang out, sickening enough to make one physically uncomfortable. They were the tiny explosions made when Avada Kedavra struck an object.
Sirius and Lupin saw their chance and were just about to rush out and hammer the Death Eaters head-on when Mr. and Mrs. Longbottom each grabbed one of them and pulled them back.
