Background / History
Sirius was one of a close group of Hogwarts friends with James Potter, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew. He, James, and Peter became Animagi so Lupin would not be alone during his werewolf transformations; Sirius's form was a large black dog. 186
During their school years, Sirius and James bullied Severus Snape. Sirius later acknowledges that some of their actions went beyond ordinary pranks and were cruel, expressing remorse when recounting them to Kayson. 201 202
Sirius chose Peter Pettigrew, rather than Lupin, as Secret-Keeper for the Potters' Fidelius Charm. Peter betrayed the Potters to Voldemort; Sirius pursued him afterward, and Peter's apparent death led to Sirius being imprisoned in Azkaban. 186 188
After discovering Peter alive in the Weasleys' Egypt photograph, Sirius agreed to aid a masked time traveler in exchange for help catching him. He infiltrated Hogwarts in dog form, wearing a ring that caused Kayson's monocle to identify him only as a “beast.” 119 120
Appearance
In human form, Sirius is a thin man in a shabby suit after years in Azkaban. His Animagus form is a large black dog. 185
- Grey eyes. 542
- Retains a noticeable neck brace while recovering from an injury. 282
- Wore a plain concealing ring while posing as a dog; removing it reveals his entries as
[Human] [Magic]to Kayson's monocle. 185 - Was given a collar engraved with the name “Bruce” during his undercover stay at Hogwarts. 129
Personality
Sirius is fiercely protective of Harry and reacts strongly to threats against him. He agrees to remain in disguise at Hogwarts specifically because Harry frequently visits Kayson's office, and he later accepts sparing Peter when Kayson points out that Harry should not have to keep living with the Dursleys. 120 201
He is impulsive, adventurous, and often immature despite his age and imprisonment. Adult wizards consider him unreliable; the Weasleys hesitate to let Ron visit him because they fear his ideas may endanger the children. Sirius nevertheless develops into a more responsible protector, setting restrictions at Black Family Manor to keep the young wizards safe. 235 318
Sirius can be defensive about his past, particularly his treatment of Snape and Kreacher, but he is capable of remorse. He regrets bullying Snape, reconciles with Lupin over the Secret-Keeper decision, and seeks to honor Regulus after learning of his brother's sacrifice. 188 201 215 216
