Background

Bain was a scrawny street beggar when Henry found him roughly three years before the story's opening. Henry brought him into his service and enabled him to study combat at the Academy under the rule allowing exceptional students to bring a squire. Bain focused on swordsmanship despite having little formal education. 1 3 90 272

He became Henry's closest attendant and protector. Bain's loyalty is uncomplicated and absolute: he promises that, should both face death in battle, he will die before Henry. Though their public relationship remains master and retainer, Bain considers them closer to partners and deliberately upholds Henry's authority in front of others. 3 9
