Background / History

The Nine-Tails is one of the nine Tailed Beasts created when the Sage of Six Paths divided the Ten-Tails' chakra to prevent its return. Its immense power made it feared as a disaster rather than treated as a living being. 184

Kushina Uzumaki was its previous Jinchuriki. Initially bound by her chains and openly hostile, the Nine-Tails gradually became accustomed to Kushina confiding in it; she wished for her child to resolve its hatred and become its family. During Naruto's birth, a masked man forcibly extracted the Nine-Tails, leading to its attack on Konoha. Minato and Kushina died stopping it, while Minato split its chakra and sealed one half within himself. 1 149 211

The Nine-Tails lived inside Naruto from his infancy. Naruto's attempt to take his own life prompted it to drag his consciousness into the Sealing Space, not out of compassion at first, but because Naruto's death would mean its own. Naruto instead rejected its attempts to cultivate hatred and began calling it his friend. 1 16

By the time Orochimaru inspected Naruto's inner world, the usual seal was absent. The Nine-Tails later confirmed that it could manifest outside Naruto, allowing the two to fight alongside one another rather than through forced possession. 8 54 76

In its full form, the Nine-Tails is a colossal orange-red fox with a lean but heavily muscled frame, blood-red pupils, and nine long tails. 54

The Nine-Tails is arrogant, confrontational, and intensely proud of being the strongest Tailed Beast. It frequently insults humans and lesser-tailed beasts, manipulates Naruto into reckless plans, and reacts violently when embarrassed or annoyed. 1 4 104

Despite this hostility, it is deeply protective of Naruto and other Tailed Beasts. It provides healing chakra without being asked, becomes enraged when it believes Chōmei has been harmed, and reprimands Naruto when hatred causes him to lose himself. 31 109 137
