Background / History

Frontier soldier and lost love

Twenty years before his final battle, Xiao Jin was a nameless soldier guarding Blackwater City for two taels of silver a month. He fell in love with Miss Shen, an accountant traveling with an army-associated merchant caravan, and promised to marry her after earning enough military merit to become a commandant 345.

Shen’s family instead arranged for her to become the concubine of Heavenly Sword Sect disciple Lu Qingyun. Xiao Jin rode three hundred li to see her, but Lu caught them together and broke his legs, ribs, left forearm, and three fingers. Shen agreed to the marriage to save his life. Xiao Jin spent half a year recovering; his fingers never healed properly, permanently affecting his blade grip 345.

Military rise and revenge

Xiao Jin fought his way through the martial realms, obtained the Demon Blade in a Northern Frontier secret realm, and eventually became Northern Suppression Grand General. In that position, he led troops against the Heavenly Sword Sect, killed more than seven hundred people without sparing servants, and tortured Lu Qingyun before making him watch the sect burn 345.

His revenge came too late to save Shen. Lu Qingyun had already discarded her, and Xiao Jin’s six-month search ended at her unmarked grave outside Azure Province City. She had died after a prolonged illness with nobody beside her. This loss remained central to his hatred of sect power 345.

The secret realm’s true purpose

After Xiao Jin’s death, Elder Mu explained that the supposed fortuitous encounter had been arranged by the Great Yin imperial clan. The Northern Frontier Secret Realm was an imperial weapons repository; Xiao Jin had believed he was discovering a naturally formed treasure, but had actually been cultivated as an imperial pawn. Elder Mu suspected that Xiao Jin learned the truth only later 354.

Appearance

  • Bearing: Stands as straight as a spear, with an icy, battle-hardened presence 279.
  • Armor: Wears black-and-gold battle armor during the northern advance and jet-black Black Iron armor while pursuing the defeated clan leaders 279 306.
  • Hair: Black hair normally secured by an iron crown; Wang Yuan’s punch knocks the crown away, leaving his hair loose over his shoulders 340.
  • Old injuries: Crooked finger joints and lingering scars from Lu Qingyun’s assault 345 346.
  • Unity of Man and Blade: Dark-red patterns spread from the weapon across his arm, shoulder, neck, and face; bloodlight appears in his pupils 340.

Personality

Xiao Jin usually treats killing and conquest with cold detachment. He executes Cao Hongshen without dismounting, then evaluates Li Zhenyue’s surrender in terms of usefulness. His conditional mercy is similarly practical: surrendered Ji Province rebels are spared, disarmed, and assigned land-reclamation labor, with execution threatened for renewed rebellion 268 306 307.

He is a calculating commander rather than merely a powerful fighter. He prioritizes isolated enemies, valuable resources, and the destruction of hostile command structures. Nevertheless, repeated victories foster overconfidence: he misidentifies the Three-Sect Alliance’s leadership and initially dismisses Wang Yuan because of his youth and lower cultivation 298 315 332 338.

His martial pride allows him to respect strength even in an enemy. When Wang Yuan makes him bleed for the first time in twelve years, Xiao Jin responds with genuine exhilaration rather than anger. His final confession also exposes grief beneath his ruthlessness, while his last order sends loyal guards away instead of letting them die attempting to rescue him 340 345 346.

Abilities & Skills

Demon Blade–Enhanced Combat

  • The Nine Nether Baleful Suppression Demon Blade allows his Organ Tempering cultivation to produce killing power comparable to a Yin-Yang Grandmaster 267.
  • He kills Peak Organ Tempering rebel leader Red-Brow Old Qu with one slash and later destroys the allied army’s second shield wall at Crossridge Pass 267 297.
  • At Peak Organ Tempering, he describes each amplified strike as possessing the destructive power of an early Grandmaster 339.
  • His Killing Intent can invade an opponent’s organs and leave persistent internal injuries, as Ji Mie Arhat experiences after their duel 348 349.
  • This weapon-enhanced strength does not grant him a true Grandmaster Dao foundation, transcendent intent, or extended lifespan 267.

Unity of Man and Blade

An ancient secret technique obtained in the Northern Frontier Secret Realm 340.

  • Nourishes the blade with his blood and uses the blade’s power to nourish his body, binding wielder and weapon together 340.
  • Intensifies his Killing Intent and forms dark-red protective armor around him 340.
  • Before fighting Wang Yuan, he had used it only twice in twelve years: against a barbarian cavalry commander beneath Blackwater City and against the Crossridge allied shield formation 340.
  • Its reciprocal bond is a major weakness. When Wang Yuan drains the blade’s essence, the technique collapses and backlash tears through Xiao Jin’s chest and abdominal meridians 344.

Hundred-Battle War Body

  • Combined with his battle armor, his Hundred-Battle War Body prevents Ji Mie Arhat from decisively breaking his defenses during their hundred-exchange duel 279.
  • He survives being driven into a cliff by Wang Yuan’s transformed golden body, though the impact injures him and makes him bleed 339 340.

Battlefield Blood Refinement

  • Intelligence reports attribute his blood-refinement method to a sinister technique acquired in the secret realm 313.
  • The Demon Blade absorbs Vital Blood and Killing Intent released by battlefield slaughter, supplying the energy for his breakthrough to Peak Organ Tempering 297.
  • His dependence on this blood-linked weapon becomes damaging when Wang Yuan consumes nearly forty percent of its baleful essence 344.

Command and Tactics

  • Led more than a hundred battles, large and small, without defeat before the Cloud Province campaign 267.
  • Uses disciplined veteran cavalry to breach formations and trigger routs rather than relying on numerical superiority 294 297.
  • Wang Yuan identifies his Crossridge strategy as deliberately scattering the six major powers so that they can be defeated separately 298.
  • Integrates surrendered resources into his army, including Bitao Sect’s ships, grain depots, waterway maps, and defensive positions 315 316.
  • Recognizes and exploits the life-draining flaw in Daoist Fencang’s unfinished armor, allowing its wearer to exhaust himself before attempting a finishing blow 337.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Nine Nether Baleful Suppression Demon Blade — His signature weapon for twelve years. Its blood patterns devour victims’ Vital Blood, while its accumulated Killing Intent supports Grandmaster-level attacks. Wang Yuan drains its essence and shatters it; Xiao Jin later uses the broken weapon to end his life 340 343 344 346.
  • Battle armor / Black Iron armor — Defensive equipment worn throughout the campaign; contributes to his resistance against Ji Mie Arhat 279 306.
  • Iron crown — Secures his hair until it is lost during his clash with Wang Yuan 340.
  • Black Steed — His warhorse of twelve years, which had never retreated from a charge before Wang Yuan’s punch sends horse and rider into the rocks 340.

Relationships

  • Miss Shen / Xue’er — His lost love. She accepts a coerced marriage to save him; his vengeance cannot undo her abandonment and death. He calls her “Xue’er” in his final farewell 345 346.
  • Lu Qingyun — Heavenly Sword Sect disciple who mutilated him and coerced Shen into marriage. Xiao Jin later tortures him during the sect’s destruction 345.
  • Wang Yuan — Final opponent and leader of the Three-Sect Allied Army. Xiao Jin moves from contempt to martial respect, then warns him that weapon-devouring power will make him an enemy of institutions dependent on sacred weapons 338 340 346.
  • Ji Mie Arhat — Opponent who intercepts the northern campaign. Their duel ends without a decisive victor, but Xiao Jin’s Killing Intent leaves the Arhat with lasting injuries 279 348.
  • Chen Xuanli — Subordinate commander entrusted with pursuing Situ Lie. Xiao Jin later receives an inaccurate report attributing Chen’s death to Situ rather than Wang Yuan 307 315.
  • Li Zhenyue — Defeated clan leader spared after surrendering. Xiao Jin demands an inventory of his clan’s property and threatens him with Cao Hongshen’s fate for dishonesty 307.
  • Wei Ping — Surrendered Bitao Sect leader appointed Naval Commander. The title conceals the extensive seizure of his troops, fortresses, resources, and authority 315 332.
  • Daoist Fencang and Su Qinghan — Leaders resisting him at Chiyan Valley. He nearly kills Fencang before Wang Yuan intervenes 335 337.
  • Deputy General and loyal guards — More than a hundred men risk their lives to rescue him after his defeat. He orders them to withdraw before his death 345 346.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Ji Province Pacification

  • Appears as a Weapon Master confronting the combined Red Brows and Green Forest rebel armies 267.
  • Kills Red-Brow Old Qu with one slash, forcing the remaining soldiers to surrender; a deputy’s salute publicly reveals his rank as Northern Suppression Grand General 267.
  • Spares the surrendered rebels for land-reclamation labor and orders half a month of military rest and reorganization before marching against Cloud Province 268.

Cloud Province Conquest

  • Leads thirty thousand elite Northern Frontier soldiers north and fights Ji Mie Arhat on the Black Mountain Ancient Road. Despite the Arhat’s warning about hidden sect power, he continues the campaign 279.
  • Routes the six powers’ hundred-thousand-strong army at Crossridge Pass. The battle destroys the coalition’s cohesion and supplies the blood aura for his cultivation breakthrough 297 298.
  • Pursues the scattered factions, kills Cao Hongshen, subordinates Li Zhenyue, and accepts Bitao Sect’s surrender 306 307 315.
  • Prioritizes Chiyan Valley for its ore veins, craftsmen, firearms, and military resources. Bitao’s water forces help seal its escape routes 315 317.
  • Assumes Daoist Fencang leads the new Three-Sect Alliance and welcomes its formation as a chance to eliminate all three sects together 332.

Battle of Chiyan Valley

  • Personally assaults Bloodline Pass, breaks Fencang’s Fire Beast attack, and exploits the unfinished Crimson Flame armor’s consumption of its wearer 335 336 337.
  • Wang Yuan arrives before Fencang’s execution. Xiao Jin underestimates him until the young alliance master withstands the Demon Blade and knocks him into the cliff 337 338 339.
  • Activates Unity of Man and Blade; the ensuing exchanges damage both combatants. He then breaks Wang Yuan’s remaining armor and drives the blade into his abdomen 340 341 342.
  • The attempted killing strike backfires: Wang Yuan consumes the weapon’s essence, awakens Weapon Devouring, Skill Forging, and uses the stolen power to strengthen his body-refining art 343 344.
  • Wang Yuan’s subsequent punches shatter the Demon Blade and decisively defeat Xiao Jin, causing the cavalry to scatter 344.

Final Confession and Aftermath

  • Reveals the personal tragedy behind his hatred of sects, contrasting the loyal guards trying to rescue him with privileged officers fleeing the battlefield 345.
  • Warns Wang Yuan that his new ability threatens the guardian weapons on which both the Imperial Court and major sects depend 346.
  • Sends his guards away and takes his own life with the broken blade. His death temporarily secures Cloud Province but weakens the Northern Frontier’s defenses against barbarian cavalry 346 349.
  • The Imperial Court subsequently orders frontier reinforcements and a three-province encirclement of Cloud Province. Wang Yuan refines the Demon Blade’s remaining essence into further cultivation gains 351.
