Penguin ultimately chose to trust Jude. The fact that he knew about the League of Assassins proved he was no ordinary person, which meant his promise carried some credibility. It was only a week, after all. What was the harm in giving it to him?
Gotham, Cobblepot Technology Company. It was a major company with considerable influence.
As one of the four great families, the Cobblepot Family might not measure up to the Wayne Family, but the difference was not too great. They had their hands in every major industry and field, with technology companies naturally being a key focus.
Even if their research capabilities could not match Wayne Group's, their equipment was no worse. Everything was the most advanced that money could buy.
Though Oswald had once been an abandoned son of the Cobblepot Family, after becoming a major player in his own right, he had regained some ties with them. Borrowing a laboratory was no problem.
Penguin led Jude into the company and pointed at the laboratory doors. "This place has the world's most advanced equipment, the best laboratories, and the finest researchers. I'm giving you seven days. Don't disappoint me."
"The finest researchers? How do they compare to Wayne Group, LexCorp, and Stark Group?"
Penguin's face darkened. He realized this guy really did not know how to talk like a human being.
"I can tell from your expression that they don't measure up. Then how do they compare to Pym Technologies, STAR Labs, S.H.I.E.L.D., and A.R.G.U.S.?"
Penguin was just about ready to start cursing.
"Fine, fine. I can tell from your face that they still don't measure up. Then... get them all out of here. I don't want a single one."
"What?" Penguin frowned.
"I said get all these researchers out of here. Other than getting in my way, they're useless."
Before Penguin could respond, several people in white lab coats were already furious. They admitted they were inferior to Tony Stark, Hank Pym, Ray Palmer, and others, but who was this ragged bum reeking of alcohol to look down on them? Was something wrong with his head?
"Mr. Oswald, although we are employed by Cobblepot Technology Company, we will never tolerate being ordered around by a scientific idiot."
After saying their piece, the group stormed off in a huff. Even Penguin was too embarrassed to stop them; after all, Jude's words had been far too arrogant.
He could only glare at Jude. "You'd better deliver on your promise. Otherwise, a week from now, there'll be one more rotting corpse in the swamp."
"A rotting corpse? Are you trying to turn me into Solomon Grundy?"
Ignoring Jude's mad ramblings, Penguin turned and left as well. The enormous laboratory was left with only one person inside, and Jude happily hummed a tune as he walked in.
"Yeah, baby!"
It was not as advanced as Grandpa Rick's workshop, but compared to that rundown apartment, it was like leaping from slash-and-burn farming into modern society.
Jude greedily ran his hands over every corner of the laboratory. This metallic, glassy texture was so familiar to him. He could feel his blood boiling and his DNA dancing.
With the right equipment and materials, creating the genetic serum within seven days would not be difficult. It might not even take seven days. Including the time needed for testing, three days should be enough. He could use the remaining time to upgrade his own gear and make some fun little things.
He took out a refrigerated case containing Penguin's blood. After extracting a drop and placing it beneath a microscope, Jude began his observations.
Time flew by. Other than going to the bathroom, Jude did not leave the laboratory for those seven days. He ate and drank inside. As for sleeping, when he was drunk, anywhere could be a bed.
Although the white coats resented Jude's remarks, they secretly kept watch on him, all planning to make him pay after seven days. Yet when they saw his crazed state, they could not help but admire him. He really did have the air of a mad scientist, and in the scientific world, madness often meant genius.
Seven days later, Penguin returned to Cobblepot Technology Company. To be honest, he did not have much hope. He had only come to put an end to his own lingering expectations.
Inside the laboratory, Penguin saw Jude sleeping soundly on the floor, and his blood pressure shot through the roof. He felt that he must have been insane to believe the man's nonsense.
"Wake him up."
One of his underlings immediately bent down to grab Jude. The instant he touched him, an electric current shot out, and the underling collapsed to the ground, convulsing violently.
Hic...
Jude slowly opened his eyes and looked around. Only after noticing the white coats and Penguin staring at him did he rise with a yawn.
"Gentlemen, don't touch me casually. That activates the automatic defense system. Also, sorry. I stayed up too late last night."
Penguin nodded. "Research is indeed mentally exhausting work."
"Research? No, no, no, you've got it wrong, Oswald. I just stayed up too late watching TV. Iron Egg Heroic Soldiers—damn, that show was good."
Black lines appeared across Penguin's forehead. The white coats beside him asked in bafflement, "Where did you get a TV?"
"I made it myself. An Interstellar TV. Never seen one before, have you? Given enough time, I could even make an interdimensional TV."
"An Interstellar TV? What the hell is that?"
Jude sprang onto the nearby lab bench and raised both hands protectively as he cried out, "Ta-da! This is it! I made it when I was bored. It can receive television programs from other planets."
As he spoke, he switched on the TV. The screen immediately showed a group of Skrulls dancing.
"This is a Skrull television program. Their nation is located in the Andromeda Galaxy."
Then he started changing channels, and all sorts of bizarre creatures quickly appeared on the screen.
"These are the Kree. Their nation is in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Honestly, their shows are a little boring."
"This is Apokolips television. It's all slave master brainwashing propaganda. It gets boring after a while."
"This is from the Shi'ar Empire. They're either competing or on their way to compete. Also boring."
Everyone stared dumbly at the scene before them. When Jude realized no one was playing along, he got bored and shot the Interstellar TV to pieces.
"What are you doing?" one of the white coats cried out.
Jude spread his hands. "I thought you didn't like watching."
Penguin suddenly shouted, "Enough! I don't care about the TV, and I have no interest in aliens. Show me your results now, or I'll tear you apart."
Ignoring the white coats who were searching through the TV fragments, Jude said seriously, "Where is Ivy? Tell me."
Penguin said irritably, "This is my territory. I call the shots."
"Fine. Then I'll show some sincerity first."
Jude took out a tube of red reagent.
"This is a serum formulated according to your genes. Once injected into your body, it will immediately make you as strong as Superman."
Penguin was naturally not reckless enough to inject it himself. Instead, he said, "Do something that will make me believe you."
Jude snapped his fingers. Someone immediately carried in an unconscious dwarf. Then Jude took out another vial and said, "I prepared this long ago. This is a serum formulated according to his genes. Watch closely."
With that, he injected it.
