Background
Ivy grew up in Gotham as a street-level petty criminal. She had few friends and was imprisoned for theft; Herbert borrowed money from the Foot Clan in an attempt to pay her bail. She later described years spent wandering, fighting, drinking, and stealing. 2 66
After being transferred to Arkham Asylum, Ivy was used in the secret human experiments conducted beneath the institution. She was the only survivor of her experimental batch, emerging unconscious with green skin and red hair. Jude found her in the laboratory and helped free her during the Arkham breakout. 14 15
The experiment left her with invasive plant genes that were gradually consuming her human genes. Jude identified 3,543 intertwined plant genes in her body and determined that she would become fully plant-like within roughly half a year without intervention. 20
Appearance
Following the Arkham procedure, Ivy had green skin and red hair, altered from her previous blonde appearance. Jude's serum restored her pale human complexion, though she retained plant-based abilities. 14 21
- Originally described as a blonde woman around twenty years old before Arkham's modifications. 14
- Her blood is a mixture of red and green due to her plant-gene infusion. 20
- Her post-serum appearance is sufficiently different from her old arrest photograph that Pepper Potts initially remarks on it. 64
- She later wears professional attire as president of the Daily Bugle. 69
Personality
Ivy is initially fearful and deeply traumatized by Arkham's experimentation, panicking when she first awakens and grieving over the possibility of losing her humanity. 17 20 Her early lack of formal education and experience with her abilities makes her dependent on Jude's instruction, but she becomes increasingly independent in both combat and public life. 18 68
She remains compassionate despite her criminal past. While serving at the Daily Bugle, she hesitates to ruin Eddie Brock's career after learning that he had been pressured into wrongdoing. 70 In combat, however, she accepts lethal force when Jude's group is under attack, though killing for the first time visibly drains her. 22
Ivy is blunt, protective of Jude, and suspicious of manipulation by authorities. She refuses S.H.I.E.L.D.'s demands, recognizes their trap at the News Department, and continues resisting even while outnumbered. 116 120 124 She also openly challenges Jude when he treats others' lives as tools for his plans. 258 265
Abilities & Skills
Plant Manipulation
Ivy can communicate with, control, accelerate the growth of, and mutate nearby plant life. Her powers emerged after Arkham's experiments and became stable after Jude administered a gene-modifying serum. 18 21
- Causes flowers and vines to grow rapidly. 18 21
- Alters plants into predatory forms, including Venus flytraps capable of swallowing opponents. 18 23
- Evolves plant defenses such as thorns, serrated leaves, paralysis toxin, corrosive secretions, and venom. 22 23 58
- Uses vegetation to restrain or incapacitate Talons, S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, Setaar robots, and Chitauri soldiers. 58 120 188 279
- Can use surrounding plant life for reconnaissance by treating it as an extension of her consciousness. 38
- Her control can cover a two-kilometer radius when supported by the Emerald Armor. 188
Pheromone Manipulation
Ivy can use pheromones in her blood to influence humans. When Rumlow comes into contact with her blood, he becomes mentally controlled and attacks his own S.H.I.E.L.D. team. 120
- Can turn an enemy into a temporary ally. 120
- Requires physical exposure to her pheromones; Rumlow is affected after Ivy's blood falls on his hand. 120
Plant-Based Resilience
Her body is genetically integrated with thousands of plant genes, granting unusual physiology but originally threatening to overwrite her humanity. 20
- The gene-modifying serum restores her human appearance and stabilizes her plant genes. 21
- S.H.I.E.L.D.'s inhibitor serum can suppress more than half of her plant-based abilities and leave her weak and dizzy. 124 128 136
- Sustained large-scale plant control can exhaust her to the point of coughing blood and losing strength. 279
Combat Adaptability
Ivy learns to apply her powers tactically under pressure, adapting plant mutations to an opponent's defenses. 23
- Creates paralyzing venom when ordinary attacks prove insufficient against a Talon's regenerative body. 23
- Uses plants as shields, restraints, escape routes, and fall cushions. 120 124
- Carries a small Wen Xin Grass pendant to ensure she has a plant available even in a plantless environment. 116
Equipment
- Wen Xin Grass necklace — a concealed living plant Ivy carries as an emergency power source. 116
- Butter Bot — Jude's modified robot accompanies her in the Talon battle and helps incapacitate an attacker. 23
- Emerald Armor — armor used during the Setaar conflict, allowing her to extend plant growth across a two-kilometer radius. 188
Relationships
- Jude Herbert — Childhood friend, rescuer, mentor, and romantic partner. Jude saves her from Arkham, stabilizes her condition with a gene serum, and later leaves the world with her. 17 21 425 441
- Firefly (Bridget Pike) — Close friend and early teammate. They escape Arkham together, travel with Jude, and fight side by side against the Court of Owls. 17 21 22
- Pepper Potts — Half-sister. Their first reunion is strained by Ivy's resentment over their father's abandonment, though Pepper seeks to make amends. 63 64 66
- Roger — Estranged father. Ivy resents him for abandoning her and her mother, but considers attending his funeral after his death. 64 66 67
- Bruce Wayne / Batman — Ally who provides her a respectable public identity through the Wayne Group and later fights alongside her against the Court of Owls. 38 58 64
- Peter Parker / Little Spider — Teammate in Jude's group. Ivy joins Jude and Peter during the Venom crisis and worries about Jude's treatment of Peter as he grows stronger. 91 258
- Veronica — Jude's conscious AI. Ivy has a tense, competitive relationship with Veronica, who taunts her over emotional and intellectual superiority. 172
Story Role / Major Arcs
Arkham Experiment and Escape
Ivy's imprisonment motivates Jude's early actions. He traces her to Arkham's underground laboratory, discovers her post-experiment condition, and frees her during the mass escape. Upon waking, she discovers her ability to influence plants. 2 14 17 18
Birth of Poison Ivy
After her first plant mutation becomes uncontrollable and nearly kills Jude's neighbor, Ivy agrees to undergo Jude's research. His serum prevents her human genes from being consumed, restores her appearance, and gives her stable command over powerful plant growth. Jude names her Poison Ivy. 18 20 21
Court of Owls Conflict
Ivy leaves Gotham with Jude and Firefly but is attacked by Court forces. She kills hostile attackers for the first time, later defeats a Talon using a venomous Venus flytrap, and continues assisting the Bat Family against the Court at Ace Chemical Factory and Wayne Manor. 22 23 38 58
New York and the *Daily Bugle*
Bruce arranges Ivy's appointment as honorary president of a Wayne-owned newspaper, allowing her to enter New York society with a respectable identity. She eventually becomes the Daily Bugle's acting president and then official president. 64 69 83 90
S.H.I.E.L.D. Captivity
S.H.I.E.L.D. targets Ivy as leverage against Jude's armor technology. She resists their ambush at the News Department with plants and pheromones, but Black Widow and Melinda May use an inhibitor serum to weaken her. She is ultimately captured, detained aboard a Helicarrier, and rescued by Jude's clones. 116 120 124 128 136
Interstellar Conflicts
Ivy continues fighting alongside Jude's allies during extraterrestrial wars. Using the Emerald Armor, she immobilizes Setaar machinery across a wide area; later, while defending Star One from the Chitauri, repeated use of her abilities pushes her into severe exhaustion. 188 279
