Background / History
Artoria disappeared from the royal palace as a newborn after King Uther's death. Merlin raised her in a fortress under the fiction that “Duke Ekt” was her father. He adopted Kay as Ekt's nominal son, used magic to establish the deception, and told the children that their mother had died of illness. Artoria's intelligence and unusual bloodline made Merlin increasingly concerned that she would see through the illusion. 111
As a child, Artoria idolized her absent father and wanted to become a leader worthy of him. She trained diligently with Kay under Merlin, displaying keen senses and an early aptitude for swordsmanship. 111 114 Luo Yifang eventually returned and became the father she recognized most deeply, personally refining her swordsmanship and leaving her with memories of his teaching, cooking, and companionship. 115 123 129 211
Artoria later became King Arthur and commanded the Knights of the Round Table. During a desperate war against the Saxons, she chose to counterattack after Luo Yifang shattered their enemy's formation. When a dragon-bone spear empowered by human sacrifices targeted her, she prepared to face it despite being unable to evade; Luo Yifang intercepted the attack and revealed himself to be alive. 129 131 132
Appearance
Artoria is a blonde, green-eyed young woman whose appearance remains that of a teenager due to the Holy Sword she drew. In battle, she adopts the imposing bearing of King Arthur; away from it, she often wears neat casual clothing. 131 211 216
- Long golden hair, formerly tied into a ponytail with a blue ribbon. 117 131
- Green eyes and a youthful face that leads others to mistake her for a girl of fifteen or sixteen. 131 459
- Silver armor materializes around her when she prepares for combat. 213 338
- Her sword is normally concealed by the Wind King Barrier, making it appear invisible. 213 238
Personality
Artoria is disciplined, proud, and unwavering in her identity as Britain’s king. She refuses to submit to other rulers simply because of their status and faces overwhelming threats without retreating. 131 209 As a commander, she prioritizes civilians and the outcome of a larger war over personal disputes. 129 231 479
Behind her regal restraint, Artoria remains emotionally attached to Luo Yifang and struggles with the life she gave up by becoming king. She does not regret taking the throne, but mourns Camelot's eventual decline and the ordinary life she might have lived. 243 Her interactions with Luo Yifang reveal a more playful, openly human side that surprises even Bedivere. 246
She is compassionate even toward opponents, granting Diarmuid a dignified end and refusing to continue a fight with Kanzaki Kaori once it was no longer necessary. 240 339 She also cares deeply for Mordred despite their painful history, ultimately choosing Mordred's chance at happiness over her own continued existence. 244
