History
Orc Invasion and the Fall of Augsburg
The Duchy entered the Orc war poorly prepared. Augsburg, its heavily garrisoned northern gateway and first defensive line, fell only months after the conflict began, exposing both the Duchy and the northeastern Warhammer Kingdom to further invasion 171 172 173.
Its response was hampered by slow mobilization and a bureaucracy still accustomed to wars between human states rather than Orc offensives. Most Moxi commanders focused on evacuating civilians and organizing a second defense line instead of immediately retaking Augsburg 173 182.
The Duchy appealed for outside assistance. The Alpha Kingdom publicly committed 200,000 troops, pressuring the Warhammer Kingdom to aid its ally as well 177.
Defense of Dapes
Moxi and Alpha expeditionary troops won a major field victory by encircling and destroying an Orc force of 30,000, including Wolf Riders and Silvermoon Wolf Tribe members. The reported number of Orc royals killed was deliberately inflated for morale and propaganda 186.
The wider campaign nevertheless deteriorated. Allied human forces suffered a crushing defeat, Dapes City prepared for siege, and Chris IX fell ill while the Crown Prince was deemed too young to direct the crisis 208.
The Duchy ultimately mobilized its remaining forces, supported the Alpha expeditionary army, and worked to lift the siege of Dapes. The subsequent defeat of the Behemoth Legion forced the Orcs to retreat, though Terence City remained under severe pressure 226 232 237 238.
George's Rule and Recovery
As Chris IX's health failed, George emerged as his successor. Hudson regarded George as a suitable ruler for a weakened country because he could avoid destabilizing mistakes while the Duchy recovered from war losses 247.
The postwar government maintained political stability, recruited talent from the Alpha Kingdom, and increasingly adopted Alpha-style military organization and reforms. Its army later became effectively modeled on the Alpha Kingdom's structure, though this drove heavy military expenditure 392 420 735.
Military and Defense
- Augsburg Defense Line — The original northern defensive system and the key link in the Duchy's defense against the Orcs; its fall triggered the wider crisis 171 172.
- Terence Defense Line — A later major defensive position threatened during the siege of Dapes and continued Orc advances 193.
- Knight Regiments — The Duchy possessed several knight formations, though some reportedly suffered major losses during the Battle of Augsburg; their actual strength and composition varied 226.
- Mage Corps — The Duchy retained more mages than its public figures implied, though it lacked enough to freely deploy mage units alongside field armies 205 220.
- Fortress Network and Magic Crystal Cannons — Later defensive preparations included extensive fortifications and large deployments of Magic Crystal Cannons, enabling the Moxi forces to resist Elven offensives and demon incursions 739 773.
- Military Reform — The Duchy copied Alpha military reforms, integrating national forces and prioritizing military development due to its exposed geography 735.
Economy and War Debt
War Bonds
To finance survival during the Orc war, the Duchy sold high-interest war bonds to domestic nobles, foreign relatives, and influential figures across human nations. The bonds offered interest as high as 30% annually, backed by a proposed postwar “Repayment Tax” 222.
Bond proceeds funded an aggressive wartime procurement program for food, armor, warhorses, magic scrolls, magic crossbows, and Magic Crystal Cannons. Much of the money was immediately converted into strategic materials rather than held as cash 222 238.
Debt Crisis
Postwar debt expanded beyond the Duchy's apparent ability to repay. Creditors feared that demanding early redemption could trigger a wider collapse, while major bondholders quietly reduced their positions 341 355.
During negotiations with the Elves and foreign creditors, the government publicly declared bankruptcy and presented itself as unable to pay compensation or redeem its debts. George then sought debt restructuring, interest reductions, and repayment extensions 518 519.
The reported debt reached 3.8 billion Gold Coins, while the restructuring arrangement provided for only 4 million Gold Coins in annual repayments 524.
Near East Development Bank
The Near East Development Bank became a major Moxi creditor through an 80 million Gold Coin loan and later served as intermediary for tax collection and debt repayments 521 524.
Under the repayment arrangement, Moxi fiscal revenue was deposited with the bank first; annual debt payments were distributed before the remainder was released to the Duchy’s government 524.
Foreign Relations
- Alpha Kingdom / Alpha Empire — The Duchy’s principal human ally. Alpha forces reinforced it during the Orc invasion, and Moxi institutions later adopted Alpha military practices. The relationship also included political marriages, military exchanges, financial dealings, and repeated requests for reinforcements 177 420 735 739.
- Warhammer Kingdom — Former rival and wartime ally whose northeastern security was endangered by Augsburg’s fall. The Moxi Duchy later annexed half of its territory amid the kingdom’s collapse 173 479.
- Elves — A powerful neighboring rival. Elven representatives attempted to extract compensation after the slave-trader incident, sought to restrain Moxi expansion, and planned a magical-beast buffer zone that could eventually threaten the Duchy with a beast tide 516 517 521.
- Human Alliance — The Alliance prioritized the Orc threat and provided political and material support when the Duchy faced its most dangerous period 193 222.
- Five Nations Alliance — The Duchy joined the Alpha Kingdom, Black Forest Kingdom, Dante Kingdom, and South Bank Kingdom in a joint defense alliance, strengthening its position against both creditors and the Elves 524.
Territorial Expansion
The Duchy expanded into territory formerly associated with the Warhammer Kingdom after its collapse. By this period, it had annexed half of Warhammer territory, while presenting much of the occupied land as territory recovered from alien forces rather than directly seized from Warhammer 479.
The newly acquired regions remained unstable. The Warhammer Restoration Organization carried out rebellions and attacks in Dapes, though the Duchy’s core territory was described as generally stable 518.
Transition to the Moxi Kingdom
After three decades of preparation and consolidation, the Moxi Duchy held a founding ceremony to become the Moxi Kingdom. By then, its military strength exceeded that of many established kingdoms, but George I had delayed the elevation until he judged its political foundation and succession legitimacy secure 768 769.
The new kingdom soon faced further existential threats, including demon forces and monsters released after the Divine Kingdoms’ barriers disappeared. Its fortress defenses and Magic Crystal Cannons formed the basis of its resistance 773.
Notable Officials
- Chris IX — Ruler during the initial Orc crisis; anxious over the Duchy’s weak defenses and later incapacitated by illness as Dapes came under threat 163 208.
- George / George I — Chris IX’s successor; guided the Duchy through reconstruction, debt negotiations, alliances, expansion, and its eventual elevation to a kingdom 341 524 768.
- Chancellor Herczeg — Senior minister involved in wartime defense, debt concerns, and negotiations; repeatedly warned of the Duchy’s fiscal danger 163 341 425.
- Marshal Hodge — Senior commander during the Orc war; recognized that the Duchy could not preserve itself through its remaining strength alone 221 237.
- Count Martins — Minister of Military Affairs who advocated keeping forces on the front to delay Orc troops and later assessed the Duchy’s deteriorating strategic situation 208 425.
- Rackel — Officer and later Governor of the Moxi Duchy; participated in wartime operations, bond negotiations, and the defense of Augsburg 222 425 642.
