Background / History
Lin Chuan had spent twelve years in the Sun Moon Sword Sect by the time Yang Chen met him. An outstanding twenty-eight-year-old Outer Sect disciple of Hidden Sword Peak, he was already regarded as a prominent figure and was said to be one step from the Transcendent Realm. He served as steward of Area 8 on Nineteenth Servant Peak, where he directly controlled the rewards and punishments of its servant disciples. 9 25
He had managed Area 8 for four years and was in his fifth—and likely final—year as steward. He deliberately cultivated promising disciples as future confidants, expecting them to become useful connections once he entered the Inner Sect. Before meeting Yang Chen, several disciples he had backed had already advanced to the Outer Sect and begun providing him benefits. 25
Lin Chuan initially intended only to observe Yang Chen's unusually rapid rise through the newcomer rankings. He decided he would invest in Yang Chen if he could reach the top ten, seeing both potential and clean origins in him. 25
After Yang Chen sought his help over the Rice Devouring Worm incident, Lin Chuan heard his case and supported the investigation. He later presided over Zhou Tao's judgment, upheld the sect's rules, and expelled Zhou Tao while allowing him to retain his cultivation out of consideration for Zhou Han's prior service. 25 27 28
Lin Chuan eventually mastered perfect Sword Intent, believing it would make comprehending transcendent power far more effective. He reached the Transcendent Realm, entered the Inner Sect, and resigned as Area 8's steward. 25 45
Before departing, Lin Chuan distributed additional resources to Area 8's disciples and personally rewarded Yang Chen with a choice of the Dark Melody Sword, the Myriad Sword Technique, or his Sword Technique Essays. Yang Chen chose the essays, whose Sword Intent insights Lin Chuan believed could enable comprehension of Sword Intent within two years. 46 47
Lin Chuan was ordered to leave the sect to govern a prefecture after his promotion. He regretted losing the chance to keep Yang Chen at his side and personally cultivate him. 47
Appearance
Lin Chuan is a tall, handsome man whose bearing becomes markedly more imposing after his breakthrough.
- Initially appeared in snow-white robes. 10
- Wore purple robes following his promotion to the Inner Sect. 46
- Could cross at least thirty meters in a single movement, so quickly that Labor Disciples could not track his figure. 10
- After reaching the Transcendent Realm, he could hover and descend from the sky. 46
Personality
Lin Chuan is stern, fair, and demanding in his official duties. Upon first addressing Area 8's newcomers, he clearly laid out their responsibilities, the consequences of disobedience, and the five-year opportunity to advance from Labor Disciple to Outer Sect disciple. He also reprimanded Area 8's overseers when newcomer task completion rates proved unsatisfactory. 1 11
Despite his strictness, he is generous and encouraging toward diligent disciples. He created the Nineteen Peaks Cultivation Ranking, personally gave each newcomer two Spirit Crystals, offered rewards for Area 8's collective performance, and distributed additional resources before leaving office. 10 22 46
He is also politically minded. Lin Chuan views capable disciples as potential members of his faction and deliberately builds relationships that can support his future cultivation needs in the Inner Sect. 25
