Childhood and the Zenin Family

Mai grew up as Maki Zenin’s younger twin within the Zenin Family’s oppressive hierarchy. She feared Cursed Spirits as a child—especially the “Head Staff” stationed at the family gate—and relied on Maki for protection. Maki promised never to leave her behind, making her eventual departure from the family a lasting source of hurt and resentment for Mai. 359

Unlike Maki’s open defiance, Mai initially adapted by compromising and concealing her fears behind a sharp, flirtatious façade. Her lower standing, limited talent, and the family’s treatment of her taught her to read moods and power dynamics closely. 79 101

Kyoto Jujutsu High

Mai enrolled as a first-year at Kyoto Jujutsu High and first appeared to the Tokyo students in an altered version of the Prefectural Jujutsu High uniform. Her reunion with Maki was immediately tense: Mai no longer behaved like the younger sister who used to follow Maki everywhere, while Maki disliked her performative charm and confidence. 64
