History
Water Ghost Disaster
Water Ghost attacks began threatening villages around Changhe County in late autumn. Big Fishing Village survived an early attack after Lin Mo and the villagers organized barricades, ropes, and incendiary oil traps against the creatures. 12 13
The crisis escalated when five villages around the county were massacred, prompting a People's Grace Order and the mobilization of Martial Artists from several counties to eradicate the Water Ghost lair. 15 With many powerful Martial Artists absent on that operation, Water Ghosts later invaded dozens of Li Family docks, crossed into the streets under cover of fog, and caused panic across the county. 29
Changhe County's remaining defenders, including County Yamen personnel, Li Family patrolmen, and Martial Artists from local factions, eventually contained the disaster. Patrol Commissioner Wang Haiqiao later credited the county with controlling civilian casualties and uncovering the deeper plot behind the attacks. 29 37
White Lotus Sect Conspiracy
The Water Ghost incidents were revealed to be connected to a White Lotus Sect scheme. Zhao Family and Qianjin Escort Agency figures sought to use attacks on the wharves to destabilize Changhe County, seize Li Family water transport, and gain merit through the resulting chaos. 22 35
Lin Mo and Li Erlang suppressed the local rebellion at Pier Number One and uncovered White Lotus Sect members and collaborators in a secret room beneath the Zhao Family Grain Store. 35 The aftermath saw the Zhao Family Grain Store and Qianjin Escort Agency dismantled, their assets seized, and their remaining Martial Artists hunted down. 38 41
Shift in Local Power
The destruction of the Zhao Family and Qianjin Escort Agency reshaped Changhe County's balance of power. Their former businesses were sold or absorbed by competing families, particularly the Sun Family Grain Store, while the Li Family's influence increased through its association with Lin Mo and Li Erlang. 37 41 51
Prefecture City Competition
Changhe County participates in Tianying Prefecture City's triennial martial arts competition. The county's results affect its reputation, access to trade opportunities, family connections, and resource development for the following three years. 50
Only five representatives could be selected through Changhe County's internal seat contest. The County Magistrate and Martial Master Wang Zhongtian offered major rewards for an A-grade evaluation, including cultivation methods, precious weapons, medicines, and high-tier pills. 50
- Lin Mo received the fifth seat after defeating two personal disciples and was formally named a Changhe County representative. 56 57
- Chen Qing represented the Wang Faction and entered the competition as one of the county's most promoted young talents. 50 71
- In the competition's first assessment, Lin Mo drew a 3,000-jin bow and earned an A-mid evaluation for Changhe County. 71
- Lin Mo and Chen Qing were later drawn against one another; local elders attempted to pressure Lin Mo into conceding to improve Chen Qing's prospects, but he refused. 74 75
