Background

Lin Mo was born into a fisherman’s family in Big Fishing Village and initially survived through poorly paid dock labor. Having transmigrated from another life, he found himself unable to escape poverty until a Jade Talisman appeared in his mind and revealed his first Destinies: Weak and Humble Destiny and Observe People and Their Aura. 1

His ability allowed him to see auras and fate-words above people’s heads. By following a food-stall owner marked by Sudden Fortune, he found a tael of silver—enough to begin pursuing martial arts training. 1 When he saw Calamity of Blood Light over his cousin Lin Hai, Lin Mo investigated Zhao Wu, concluded that Zhao Wu threatened both Lin Hai and himself, and chose to strike first. 2

Lin Mo ambushed and killed Zhao Wu while the ruffian was drunk. The act removed the threat to his cousins, earned him Luck, and enabled his first Destiny upgrade. 4 He then entered the Changhe Martial Arts School, where his diligence, rapid comprehension, and help from Xu Changfeng secured him a place under Yang Yun. 7 8

Appearance

Lin Mo began as a thin, underfed dockworker whose clothes carried the smell of fish, sweat, and labor. His successive Destiny and root-bone evolutions make him taller, broader, and visibly more athletic. 1 3 26

Personality

Lin Mo is cautious, pragmatic, and unusually conscious of the consequences of his actions. After Zhao Wu’s death is attributed to an unknown “hero,” he immediately assesses the risk of exposure, seeks information on martial-school factions, and prepares avenues of protection rather than assuming he is safe. 6 He applies the same caution to the Li Family’s First-Class Sponsorship, asking about its obligations before accepting its money and resources. 20

He is also compassionate toward people who share his background. He feeds Chen Qing when they are both impoverished apprentices, teaches stance training to youths at the Stone Wall Courtyard, and purchases his uncle and cousin’s catch at dock price to ease their burdens. 7 8 10 His generosity is deliberate but genuine: he understands poverty firsthand and wants others to have the opportunity martial arts gave him. 26 27

In combat, Lin Mo is decisive and capable of severe ruthlessness. He targets weak points, uses ambushes where necessary, cripples Zhao Hubiao to protect the breathing-technique secret, and kills White Lotus Sect disciples without hesitation when he judges them to be a continuing threat. 4 25 78 Despite this, he restrains himself when political consequences matter, such as sparing Chu Rencai from a more crippling defeat. 54

His loyalty is a defining restraint on his ambition. Though Li Erlang offers to make him his sole heir, Lin Mo refuses to betray Yang Yun while still under Yang’s tutelage. 36
