History

Rōran was an ancient desert kingdom whose royal family inherited authority over the Dragon Vein. The Dragon Vein was sealed by Namikaze Minato after Anrokuzan's defeat, using sealing techniques beyond Naruto's ability to perform. 287

By the time Aburame Tetsumaru's Avatar located it through Minato's archived mission coordinates, Rōran had become ruins: its buildings were dilapidated or collapsed, while the entire city and surrounding area lacked humans, animals, insects, lizards, and vegetation. 285

Queen Sara later described how worsening conditions across the desert—banditry, sandstorms, hunger, and growing casualties—forced Rōran's people to disperse. She spent her remaining resources and used bribes to settle families separately among other oases, accepting that their descendants would eventually assimilate into the Land of Wind and that Rōran itself would disappear. 310

Aburame Tetsumaru sought to acquire the Dragon Vein through the Rōran royal family's authority. Sara was asked to sell the inherited Dragon Vein and assist in researching it, though she feared a repeat of Anrokuzan's actions. 287

Zenith Civilization subsequently declared the Ancient Kingdom of Rōran off-limits to Sunagakure. After defeating and detaining Sunagakure's leadership and elite ninja, Tetsumaru demanded a promise that Sunagakure would never approach Rōran again. 313 When Sunagakure later sent genin to observe the site, Tetsumaru had tall walls built around the entire city, cutting off all visibility. 332

Ruins and Reconstruction

• Rōran's original high-rise buildings were demolished by Butler, who used Vibration Release to clear the abandoned structures. 332

Dragon Vein Research

The Dragon Vein is Rōran's defining strategic resource. Its seal consists of multiple composite sealing techniques, and dismantling one risks causing the others to fail and triggering a massive eruption. Zenith Civilization planned to replace the royal-family contract seal immediately with a new control seal, then rapidly undo the Four-Symbol Seal while preserving a final mysterious seal for analysis. 308

Torch Dragon determined that one of the seals was not originally temporal in nature, but had acquired temporal characteristics from prolonged exposure to the Dragon Vein. Comparing its original and altered states became the basis of his research into time. 308

Rōran became Zenith Civilization's primary timeline-travel hub. Its importance rose sharply once timeline exploration became possible, with Star Sea Hall identifying increased investment in the site as essential. 416

For operations in alternate timelines, controlling Rōran is treated as a top priority because it serves as the arrival point for travelers. 477
