In a dimly lit room, a white man with a face full of stubble and heavy dark circles laughed wildly, as if he had just won the lottery jackpot.
"Ha ha ha, this is it! I found it! Finally found it! This is the crucial point! My guess was right!"
The room was covered in all kinds of notes, detailing every order Lin Feng had given and every conversation he had had, aside from his discussions with Liang Gong in the Three-Body Game.
Countless lines crisscrossed the walls, forming a massive network of connections. Every person Lin Feng had spoken to, as well as their subsequent reactions and actions, was displayed within it.
It could be said that the intelligence was nearly comprehensive. With Sophon's intelligence-gathering capabilities, ETO could observe the entire world from a near-godlike perspective.
After his unrestrained laughter subsided, the white man's exhausted gaze shifted to a photograph on the wall. The person in the photo was Feng Taylor.
"As expected of you, Feng Taylor! Only you would dare devise such a crazy plan!"
"What a pity. What a shame. You've already been wallbroken, Wallfacer Feng Taylor!"
Filled with delight, the white man used Sophon to establish communications with others in the organization.
"Gather the personnel. The wallbreaking is complete. We can begin planning the Wallbreaker Operation against Feng Taylor."
"Understood."
"Feng Taylor, the humiliation you inflicted upon ETO will be returned in full. I can already imagine the look on your face when that time comes. Heh heh heh..."
After ending the communication, the white man chuckled sinisterly. There was no trace of fatigue in his dark-circled eyes—only the pleasure of soon wallbreaking Wallfacer Feng Taylor.
Undercurrents were surging, yet Lin Feng knew nothing of it.
Lin Feng and the CIA agents assigned to protect him arrived at the nearest military base on United States soil.
Today, Lin Feng had come to check on the research progress of the Intelligent AI.
After he got out of the car, the CIA agents spread out to guard against unexpected situations. Only one CIA agent accompanied him.
"It's rare for you to go out in person," the CIA agent said.
Ever since escaping ETO's assassination attempt last time, the CIA agents had not seen Lin Feng travel far again. He had not even stepped outside the villa, issuing all his orders through others or holding video calls with people far away, as though he had become a complete shut-in.
Lin Feng shrugged. "You have to go out for a walk once in a while, or your bones will rust."
He had Liang Gong to thank for warning him in advance last time. Otherwise, he really might have fallen for it. Lin Feng knew that very well.
He was no Superman. He was flesh and blood. A bomb would blow his body and the plane's steel apart into pieces.
And not just bombs—one bullet could kill him too. The cavitation effect alone could leave a bowl-sized hole in a person's body.
Those movie scenes where someone took more than a dozen bullets and only bled a little were complete nonsense.
Even having numerous bodyguards was no use. ETO members could hide far away and blow his head apart with a single sniper round, like a watermelon bursting open.
That was why he felt it was necessary to make preserving his own life the premise of his actions.
The reason he had come to this military base was, first, because he was tired of staying in the villa, and second, because the base's security level was high enough—on par with that of his villa.
"The security level here is pretty high."
As he walked through the base, Lin Feng felt relaxed. After changing environments, he felt like a different person.
The air carried a strong smell of engine oil, but that did not matter. Lin Feng merely wanted a change of scenery.
The CIA agent following Lin Feng said, "As you instructed, the security level here matches that of your residence. We invested a great deal of manpower and resources to achieve that."
There was a faint note of regret in his words. In this CIA agent's view, the expense seemed excessive.
Lin Feng shook his head. "It's worth it. The things being developed here will eventually be released to the entire world. If we don't enforce strict controls now, the consequences will be serious once something goes wrong."
The Intelligent AI being developed would eventually enter the global market. In the future, it would further expand the labor force of human civilization.
If something went wrong and it failed to provide the labor it was meant to, who would take responsibility?
"Even with strict controls, many problems will still arise—for example, terrorist attacks using AI robots," the CIA agent countered.
This had already happened. As intelligent robots became widely popularized, terrorists would illegally steal them, physically crack them to obtain modification privileges, and turn the robots into puppets under their control.
In addition to drones, intelligent robots had become popular weapons platforms on the Middle Eastern battlefield.
Of course Lin Feng knew all that, but so what?
If people died, they died. People would grow old and die naturally anyway. Dying early or late made no difference.
Lin Feng said, "If you keep looking forward and backward, there'll never be any progress. Didn't the First Industrial Revolution burn enormous amounts of coal? Did anyone care about global warming?"
"To solve the problem of insufficient productivity in human civilization, the large-scale application of Intelligent AI is a necessary choice."
They reached their destination. Someone had been waiting in front of the research institute for quite some time, eagerly anticipating Lin Feng's arrival.
"Mr. Taylor, I'm Martin Rogge, Mr. Davis's research assistant."
Lin Feng sized the person up. The name sounded masculine, but she was a woman. She had freckles on her face, round-framed glasses perched on her nose, and hair that looked somewhat messy.
She gave off the impression that her life was a complete mess.
"I'll be responsible for guiding you and showing you the research results." Martin Rogge gestured for Lin Feng and the others to follow.
"Ms. Rogge, where's Davis? Why isn't he here?"
Lin Feng looked around. Goring Davis, who should have been present to welcome him, was nowhere to be seen, so he asked.
Hearing this, Ms. Rogge, who was walking ahead, rubbed her forehead and let out a troubled sigh.
"He was resting. A few days ago, he suddenly said things like 'a burst of inspiration' and 'I've got it,' then worked without sleep for two days and nights. He was still asleep now after reaching his physical limit."
The CIA agent nodded and lowered his voice as he spoke to Lin Feng.
"It seemed handing the work over to Davis was the right choice."
"My judgment has never been wrong," Lin Feng said.
Ms. Rogge led the two of them into a storage area. It was enormous, roughly the size of a football field, and filled with various mechanical bodies that appeared to be robots.
"This is the Mechanical Dog we developed. It's probably our most successful model."
Ms. Rogge patted the Mechanical Dog's body, her eyes looking as though she were gazing at her own child.
The CIA agent examined the Mechanical Dog curiously. Its appearance was rather strange. It had neither a head nor a tail, only a torso and four limbs supporting its body. Its four legs used backward-bending joints.
It was vastly different from the robots in the agent's imagination, and he could not help asking in confusion.
"Why does a robot need limbs? Wouldn't tracks or rubber wheels work?"
"They would, but leg joints are more versatile. They can handle steep staircases. Rubber wheels wear down easily and may get tangled in thread, string, and similar things, knotting up completely. Tracks also require consideration for fragile environments, such as floors paved with ceramic tiles," Ms. Rogge said.
She explained why they had designed the jointed structure.
