Background / History
Lin Feng is a reincarnator who died in a car accident and was reborn as the son of Frederick Taylor, a high-ranking American official. Years later, the announcement of the Wallfacer Plan reveals that he has transmigrated into the world of Three-Body—and that his father is one of its Wallfacers 1.
Remembering the broad course of the original story, Lin Feng spends five years preparing to persuade Frederick Taylor to transfer his authority. He takes over after Taylor is broken by a Wallbreaker, chiefly to prevent his father's suicide and to reduce humanity's internal conflict during the Trisolaran Crisis 1. Taylor publicly names him his representative under the identity Feng Taylor, making any plans announced by Lin Feng part of Taylor's Wallfacer plan 1.
Although he initially has no independent plan to defeat the Trisolarans, Lin Feng relies on his knowledge that Luo Ji's Dark Forest deterrence is humanity's eventual salvation. He considers himself unsuitable to bear the same burden as Luo Ji and deliberately withholds that knowledge to avoid altering Luo Ji's role 1 43.
Personality
Lin Feng is blunt, theatrical, and comfortable being perceived as unreasonable. He deliberately cultivates the image of a dictatorial Wallfacer to intimidate opponents and make potential challengers hesitate before interfering with his work 5 7. He treats public criticism with contempt, particularly when he believes it obstructs humanity's long-term survival 30 81.
Behind that performance, he is a pragmatic planner who repeatedly prioritizes civilization-scale outcomes over personal reputation. He is willing to deceive adversaries, exploit uncertainty surrounding Wallfacer plans, and retain military power when he considers it necessary for humanity's future 23 155.
He is also protective toward people he considers his own. He worries about Kamon Stock's safety, repays Knight William's loyalty, respects Luo Ji's desire to live freely, and crosses four light-years to keep his promise to Liang Gong 71 88 207 238. Despite his confidence, he is acutely aware of his limits; he regards Luo Ji's capacity to serve as Swordholder as something he himself could not replicate 43.
Abilities & Skills
Wallfacing and Strategic Deception
Lin Feng uses ambiguity, misdirection, and deliberately provocative behavior to make both human institutions and the ETO misread his intentions.
- Assumes a dictatorial public persona as a calculated deterrent against opposition to his authority 7.
- Continues bluffing about possessing additional plans after a Wallbreaker exposes one of his operations 23.
- Anticipates an ETO assassination attempt on his aircraft by considering the assassins' perspective and changing his movements accordingly 33.
- Designs the Object-Person Replacement Plan, a false civilization and “Labyrinth of Lies” intended to deceive the Hui Civilization 371.
- His early Wallfacer role is limited by his own admission that he lacks a genuine plan to replace Luo Ji's Dark Forest deterrence 1 43.
Political and Organizational Leadership
Lin Feng builds influence from Wallfacer authority into direct control of the Taylor System.
- Uses Wallfacer authority to advance the Macro-Electron Storage Plan and later becomes an official Wallfacer in his own right 5 92.
- Drives the expansion of virtual education and game-based learning, including standards for educational games built around enjoyment, realistic physics, and resistance to cash-grab design 49 54.
- Represents the Taylor System in negotiations with the Solar System Fleet Joint Conference and refuses to surrender its armed forces 154.
- Retains the Taylor System's military strength even after being stripped of Wallfacer status and removed from the Wallfacer Program 155.
- Establishes requirements for Swordholder candidates, including proof that they possess the courage to broadcast Trisolaran coordinates during an invasion 278.
Technological Foresight
Lin Feng repeatedly directs research and military development toward technologies he considers necessary for humanity's survival.
- Proposes the Macro-Electron Storage Plan, which later reaches practical application alongside controlled nuclear fusion 7 94.
- Pushes the Space Force toward antimatter weapons, antimatter shields, near-light-speed kinetic weapons, and gamma-ray axial cannons through virtual warfare exercises 116.
- Shares the Magnetic Rail project with the entire Alliance rather than retaining it solely for the Taylor System 194.
- Interprets information from the Ring to explain that the universe once possessed ten dimensions and that the Four-Dimensional Fragment is a remnant of an ancient interstellar war 263.
- Recognizes that light-speed warp travel does not by itself escape the Dark Forest and argues that advanced civilizations must already possess countermeasures against it 268.
Remote Embodiment and Posthuman Adaptation
Lin Feng makes extensive use of technologies that separate his consciousness from a conventional human body.
- Operates humanoid robotic doubles remotely through a virtual pod, using them for public appearances and dangerous meetings 65 71.
- Uses a robotic substitute after physical injury and hibernation, with later models capable of matching his original body's agility and expressions 108.
- Undergoes atomization and learns to use atomic computers to observe the macroscopic world from an atomic-scale existence 314.
- Is later photonized before being restored to a human body within ten-dimensional spacetime 382 384.
Equipment / Items
- Wallfacer authority — Initially exercised as Frederick Taylor's representative, then formally granted to Lin Feng himself 1 92.
- Modified VR gear — Used to enter the banned Three-Body Game under the ID “Passerby A” 16.
- Humanoid robotic substitutes — Remotely controlled doubles used to reduce assassination risk and act publicly in his place 65 71.
- Artificial heart — Implanted before his near-light-speed journey to the Trisolaran System, allowing increased circulation under extreme acceleration 235.
- Atomic-computer network — Enables atomic people to observe, communicate, and maintain virtual social platforms after atomization 314 327.
Relationships
- Frederick Taylor — Father and original Wallfacer. Lin Feng takes over his authority to protect him from the fate awaiting him after Wallbreaking; Taylor later chooses to remain in his own era rather than travel to the future 1 92.
- Edith — Maid, aide, and trusted technical guide. She assists Lin Feng with robotic substitutes, atomic-scale navigation, intelligence work, and the administration of his plans 71 107 314.
- Liang Gong / 1314 — Trisolaran contact first encountered in the Three-Body Game. Their relationship develops from mutual suspicion into deep trust; Lin Feng travels to the Trisolaran System to fulfill his promise to bring her back 20 227 238.
- Luo Ji — Fellow Wallfacer whose Dark Forest deterrence Lin Feng considers irreplaceable. Lin Feng protects Luo Ji's freedom where possible and insists that Luo Ji should help select a successor Swordholder 43 207 278.
- Dai Weisi — Longstanding scientific and political collaborator within the Taylor System. They discuss space defense, the Magnetic Rail project, high-dimensional research, and the System's future 28 194 243.
- Knight William — SG Company executive and ally in Lin Feng's virtual-education initiatives. Lin Feng later intervenes to secure his release and protects SG Company's interests 49 88.
- Cheng Xin — A potential political danger in Lin Feng's view. He keeps her under house arrest at Taylor System headquarters to prevent her influence from affecting humanity's future 281.
- 0-1 — A dynamic-state entity of overwhelming power that follows Lin Feng's instructions in the final cosmic conflict and helps establish a new universal order 384.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Wallfacer Substitute
Lin Feng inherits Frederick Taylor's practical authority after Taylor is broken by a Wallbreaker. To consolidate his position, he publicly behaves like an autocrat, has a reporter arrested as an alleged ETO member, and announces the Macro-Electron Storage Plan 1 5 6.
The ETO treats him as an increasingly serious threat, while Lin Feng uses the Three-Body Game to interact with Liang Gong and conceal his true motives. Even after being exposed by a Wallbreaker, he maintains the appearance of possessing further plans 20 23 39.
Virtual Education and the Rise of the Taylor System
Lin Feng promotes virtual education through games, instructing SG Company to prioritize genuine entertainment, useful learning, and realistic simulation rather than simple examination tasks 49 51. His policies transform the gaming sector into a major social force and eventually make him a legendary figure to later generations 107.
Following hibernation and political upheaval, Lin Feng emerges as a central figure of the Taylor System. He directs the System's technological and military development, including virtual space warfare, antimatter research, and fleet construction 116 154.
When the Solar System Fleet Joint Conference demands disarmament, Lin Feng refuses. The Taylor System keeps its armed forces, but he loses his formal Wallfacer identity and legal privileges 154 155.
Dark Forest Crisis and the Trisolaran Journey
Lin Feng recognizes the danger surrounding Luo Ji's role and chooses not to disturb him after his awakening, believing Luo Ji deserves a brief period of peace before his future burden resumes 207. After Dark Forest deterrence succeeds, Lin Feng realizes firsthand that deterrence depends on irreversible resolve rather than abstract numerical “deterrence levels” 225.
When he learns that the Liang Gong Project has been abolished, Lin Feng decides to personally travel to the Trisolaran System. He publicly states that he is going to meet an online friend, then undertakes a near-light-speed journey across four light-years to fulfill his promise to Liang Gong 227 228 235.
He returns with Liang Gong after negotiating with the Trisolaran administrators, accepting their demand that she carry a quark bomb and preserve Trisolaran secrecy 236 238.
Atomic Civilization and Cosmic Politics
Lin Feng opposes the political ideology he calls feminization, viewing it as a threat to human resilience. After an attack against him on Earth, he returns to the Taylor System and mobilizes its resources against the ideology's supporters 246 248 249.
As humanity enters the atomic era, Lin Feng undergoes atomization and advocates a survival strategy based on “non-existence”: avoiding attention, using Sophon technology for detection, and refusing to become a target in the Dark Forest 314. He later develops a brutal cosmic-survival game intended to teach players that victory requires surviving by any means necessary 340.
In the final conflict, Lin Feng is brought into ten-dimensional spacetime by 0-1. He calls for a cosmic alliance, an end to uncontrolled civilization wars, and protection for young civilizations. After the new order is established, he abandons further ambition in favor of life with his family 384.
