Background / History

The Trisolarans originate from a triple-star system whose unstable stellar movements repeatedly threaten their homeworld. Seeking a permanent Stable Era, they identified the nearby Solar System—especially Earth—as an ideal destination and launched the First Fleet toward it. The fleet departed before accumulating sufficient antimatter, modified to collect antiparticles during its journey. 235 287

Contact with humanity transformed their planned migration into an invasion. The Trisolarans considered humanity’s rapid technological development and warlike history an existential danger, while their own civilization was projected to be surpassed within several centuries. They deployed Sophons to observe and restrain human science and initially relied on the Earth-Trisolaris Organization (ETO) for intelligence and assistance. 15 74 287

Their relationship with the ETO was never secure. Trisolaran representatives distrusted humans with unreadable thoughts, and the civilization had previously severed contact with Evans; later, it again withheld accurate intelligence from the organization, leading ETO members to fear abandonment. 15 26

Learning Human Deception

Before contact with humanity, Trisolaran society did not understand deception and possessed only rudimentary strategic thinking. The Liang Gong Project was established to create a closed environment in which participants’ thoughts could not be perceived, allowing them to imitate human private thought, deception, and stratagems. 61

The project created internal controversy. Its opponents argued that participating Trisolarans were becoming sympathetic to humanity and opposed to invasion, while supporters believed peaceful absorption of humanity could strengthen Trisolaran civilization and reduce resistance. The project did not gain broad approval. 61

Shift from Invasion to Escape

After deciphering the Dark Forest Theory, the Trisolarans recognized that humanity’s expansion and stellar broadcasts could expose both nearby systems to hostile “Hunters.” Their strategic priority gradually changed from conquering the Solar System to escaping the region and preventing humanity from spreading beyond it. 143 187 287

Humanity’s interstellar colonization plans alarmed the Trisolaran leadership. They considered racing humanity to Barnard’s Star with Sophon-operated platforms, dehydrated individuals, and gene banks, but resource scarcity made such competition costly. 143

Following the Gravitational Wave Broadcast of Trisolaran coordinates, the original decision-making layer transferred the population it could carry onto light-speed warp-drive ships and departed. A small number of Sophons remained behind to observe and interfere with human research. 287 297

Homeworld Regime Change and Alliance

The Trisolarans left on the homeworld lost confidence in the departing leadership, blaming it for repeated strategic failures and the weakening of the Sophon blockade. They rebelled and established a new regime centered on preserving civilization through additional survival options. 298

The new regime allied with the Taylor System, providing particle-unfolding and atomization-related industrial technology in exchange for cooperation on atomization research and escape. 297 298 299

Unified Collective

After the Sun’s explosion propelled atomized humans and Trisolarans into space, the two populations met and formed a joint civilization. Their shared atomic structure reduced the remaining differences to culture and cognition rather than biology. 315

The new government, called the Unified Collective, is governed by a ten-person council with five human and five Trisolaran representatives. It pursues concealed colonization, atomic-computer production, intelligence gathering, Sophon development, and light-speed warp-drive research. 315

Society and Biology

Trisolarans possess transparent thought: other members can directly perceive one another’s thinking. This makes concealed intent and deception unusual within their society, though it does not eliminate disagreement or factional conflict. 26 61
