Background / History

Mei is the daughter of Raiden Ryoma of ME Company. Her mother died when Mei was two, and she was later kidnapped by a terrorist organization at age seven, followed by three years of rehabilitation. Ryoma gave her an elite education and personally taught her the family sword art, Hokushin Itto-ryu. Mei recalls their sword training as one of the happiest parts of her childhood. 318

After Ryoma was framed and imprisoned, Mei was abandoned by her former friends and isolated at school. Her despair and negative emotions gave rise to Herrscher Mei, an alternate persona that served as both her former “mask” and a guardian for the feelings she could not bear herself. 4 23 88

Kiana brought Mei out of this darkness, becoming her closest friend. Even after returning to happiness, Mei suffers nightmares of a lightning-wielding version of herself killing everyone around her, including Kiana. 4

Mei's Honkai transformation escalates in Changkong City. Xing finds her in an unstable Oni-Kiana state and defeats her, then receives a flood of her memories when he touches her. After she recovers, Mei entrusts Xing with her power to eliminate the Titan forces, though the Gem of Conquest's energy leaves him badly eroded. 6 7

She joins Kiana's provisional squad alongside Xing and Bronya, eventually becoming a Valkyrie of the Fire Moth Squad. Returning to Changkong City later, Mei reflects on how quickly she has changed from an ordinary student into a Honkai fighter. 9 22

Mei is a black-haired girl whose hair becomes purple when her Herrscher power manifests. She commonly fights with a katana and later receives the crimson Dawn Assault armor. 28 146

Personality

Mei is gentle, considerate, and emotionally vulnerable. She is acutely affected by abandonment and by the fear of losing Kiana, but she repeatedly chooses to face danger rather than retreat from it. 10 88

Within the Fire Moth Squad, she takes on a nurturing role: she cooks for the group, teaches Xing and Kiana cooking, checks on injured teammates, and often acts as the group's responsible older-sister figure. 79 139 320

Her compassion does not prevent her from becoming fierce in battle. Mei is especially protective when Kiana or Xing is threatened, and her resolve sharpens into the persona publicly associated with the “Thunder Queen.” 142 330 352

Herrscher Mei

Herrscher Mei is Mei's violent alternate persona, born from the despair surrounding Ryoma's imprisonment and Mei's social isolation. Xing describes her as a guardian created to bear Mei's negative emotions rather than an entirely separate enemy. 88
