Another Halloween Night had arrived.
It happened to be Friday. With the weekend break coinciding with the holiday, tonight's feast was especially lively.
Legend had it that Halloween originated from an ancient tale in Celtic mythology. On this day every year, people believed that the souls of the dead would return to their old homes, searching for substitutes through whom they could be reborn. The living feared ghosts and came up with all kinds of ways to deal with them. Some extinguished their hearth fires and candles, doing everything they could to hide. Some dressed themselves as monsters and demons, either to conceal their identities or scare away the ghosts. Others placed delicious food outside their doors for the spirits to enjoy, currying favor with them to keep them from venting their anger on the living. That was also the origin of "trick or treat"...
These measures gradually spread and, over the long course of history, slowly became customs.
