Background / History

Su Jiang was a 35-year-old programmer whose company planned to lay him off because of his age and lack of leadership potential. Though experienced and dependable, he believed the industry had already decided that programmers his age were expendable. He resigned rather than remain as a low-paid technician. 1

Before the events of Meta World, Su Jiang was divorced from Lin Jing and had limited contact with their daughter, Su Yu. His fragmented memories later reveal that, in a previous timeline, Su Yu and Lin Jing were captured, while he was imprisoned and abused by a powerful Overlord because of his rare Dimensional Avatar Talent. After escaping, he gathered materials for Kurumi's Twelve Bullets and sent his memories back in time. 12

Following an encounter with a girl resembling Tokisaki Kurumi, Su Jiang awakened with memories of the future and recognized that Meta World would eventually affect reality. He resigned, bought VR equipment, and entered the game on its launch day, determined to alter his own fate and protect Su Yu. 3 4

Appearance

As Su Jiang, he is a weary middle-aged man with stubble and an unshaven appearance. After his fate was changed, his body became that of Su Xi: a petite, red-haired young woman whose features vaguely resemble Su Yu's. 5 58 70

Su Jiang begins as resigned and self-deprecating, having been worn down by age discrimination, divorce, and years of work. Despite this, he remains practical: he evaluates risks, keeps a low profile when his strength draws attention, and uses his future memories to pursue money, levels, and resources efficiently. 1 5 12

His defining motivation is Su Yu. Once she comes to live with him, he becomes intensely protective and attentive to the fear and neglect she developed under Lin Jing's care. He promises that she can rely on him, avoids making her feel burdensome, and resolves to change the future in which she becomes powerless before stronger people. 26 28 35

He dislikes owing favors and tends to handle crises alone, as seen when he relies on Meta World's healing potential rather than conventional treatment for his organ failure. Nevertheless, Nan Shuang's care and his former colleagues' hospital visit remind him that he still has people who value him. 61 67
