Background / History

Jiraiya returned to Konoha after spending three years in Amegakure training Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan. He had initially taught the war orphans out of guilt, then chose to remain after seeing Nagato's Rinnegan and believing him to be the Child of Prophecy. He regarded all three as promising disciples. 12

Upon returning, he learned of Tsunade's hemophobia and grief following Dan Katō's death. Orochimaru attacked him while confronting him over his absence; Jiraiya ultimately accepted the beating rather than retaliate, driven by guilt over failing to support Tsunade. 12 13

Although considered the weakest student among the young Sannin, Jiraiya found a path to their level through Mount Myōboku and the guidance of the Great Toad Sage. 93 162

Orochimaru later entrusted him with a child who had survived Hashirama Cell fusion.
