Background / History

Sasuke was praised by Orochimaru as a child, who offered to teach him in the future. Orochimaru's interest drew Kakashi's vigilance, though Orochimaru warned Kakashi not to misinterpret his intentions. 120

The Uchiha massacre left Sasuke hospitalized from mental shock. After Itachi used Tsukuyomi to force him to relive the event and told him to seek the Mangekyō Sharingan, Sasuke awakened his one-tomoe Sharingan and resolved to become stronger and kill Itachi. Kakashi and Jiraisui monitored him afterward, while Sakura, Ino, and Naruto worried about his condition. 219

During the Chūnin Exams, Orochimaru manipulated Sasuke by making Naruto appear captured and Sakura appear dead. Sasuke overcame his fear, awakened a second tomoe in his Sharingan, and attacked Orochimaru with his strongest combination attack, but could not injure him. Orochimaru injected him with an Uzumaki-clan cell enhancement serum and promised mentorship if Sasuke performed well. 277 278

After Itachi easily defeated him again, Sasuke chose to leave Konoha and pursue power under Orochimaru despite Sakura's pleas. Orochimaru deliberately made the process difficult to test whether Sasuke truly possessed the resolve to seek training. 311

Orochimaru's training reshaped Sasuke's attitude as well as his combat ability. Following a severe lecture, Sasuke became noticeably more polite; Orochimaru later gave him the Kusanagi Sword, had Kimimaro train him, and brought him to Ryūchi Cave to pursue Sage Mode and a summoning beast. 325

After two and a half years, Orochimaru taught Sasuke advanced theory on nature fusion, Kekkei Genkai, Kekkei Tōta, and Kekkei Mōra.
