Background / History

Kurama once lived alone and freely in the wilderness, feared by every human who encountered him. Uchiha Madara used the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan to seize control of his body, force him into a Summoning Contract, and make him fight Hashirama Senju. Hashirama defeated Madara and left Kurama lethargic after striking him with the Top Transformed Buddha. 39

He was subsequently sealed into Mito Uzumaki, then Kushina Uzumaki. Kurama resented their sealing techniques and the humans who treated him as a weapon rather than a sentient being. During Kushina's childbirth, a masked wielder of Mangekyō Sharingan control extracted and controlled Kurama again, forcing him to rampage through Konoha before he was sealed into Naruto. 39

At first, Kurama expected Naruto's isolation and resentment to erode the seal and eventually allow him to escape. Naruto instead resisted Kurama's negative chakra through reason and treated him as an equal. Their first meetings began with television and conversation, gradually replacing Kurama's hostility with companionship. 40

Naruto formally asked for his name and proposed friendship; Kurama answered, “My name is Kurama.” Their bond grew through co-op games, shared shows, training, and increasingly candid discussions of Kurama's past. 16 17 39

As Naruto's ambitions expanded, Kurama became an active collaborator rather than merely a sealed power source. He advised Naruto on threats such as Akatsuki and Kara, coordinated with other Tailed Beasts, and proposed having them live in Naruto's body to help control the Ten-Tails. 47 270 338

Appearance

Kurama is an enormous orange fox with nine tails in his true form. He can condense chakra into a smaller, fox-like form suitable for appearing outside Naruto's body or resting on Naruto's shoulder. 17 67 233

Kurama is intensely proud of his power and reacts badly when Naruto doubts him or others treat him as a lesser beast. His long history of manipulation, sealing, and human fear left him resentful and distrustful, particularly toward Sharingan users. 17 30 39

Despite this, he becomes affectionate and companionable with Naruto. He enjoys cooperative games more than watching television alone, supports Naruto's training, and worries when Naruto risks losing control. 17 18 134

Kurama is also a dedicated shut-in with a fondness for television, games, and novels. His confidence as a writer greatly exceeds his early ability; harsh criticism of his first original work causes a brief mental collapse, but he continues writing and later seeks to adapt a new novel into a film. 125 127 233
